what is the best stuff to use to repair the old cornice in old houses .. is there a specific plaster that i can use , or will i have to knock up the old style lime plaster.. im thinking of using the original method with a horse and template running on runners on the wall and ceiling ... any one got any ideas ?

I always use casting plaster and mix it with lime putty for making good. When you say your going to horse it up, how big is the repair? Sometimes its easier to run a new section on the bench and then fit in place rather than in situ.

nice one mate ... your always spot on .. the jobs not that big that i need a whole section , just thought i could repair a few cracks all at once by running the horse along it .. will they repair like this or will i have to do some more preparation on them .. many thanks

If its only cracks I would just cut into the cracks with a stanley, apply a weak solution of pva to control the suction a bit, fill with small tool and lightly sand.
