rendering the inside of a fireplace

hi all, I have taken an old fireplace out on a job. my customer is having a wood burning stove installed. I need to render the bare brickwork.
can I just use washed sand, cement? will there be any point putting hydrated lime with it. or will this be no good, and I have to use a fire retardant product?

Use normal render sand and cement and lime rub up to a smooth finish and paint never had any problems and done a few
