can you render on to fire bricks, got a bread oven to render, but its all built of fire bricks rather than blocks. me thinks it will crack. opinions please gentlemen.

never done one mate but from what ive been told eml then 5-1/6-1 inc lime ........you dont want it too strong or it will crack

cheers napper, can be done, but can't get that stuff here. so going to try fire cement with sand. its a shyte job for a friend, been asking me for two years to do it. gonna tell him it might crack though. carlos not to sure about the eml though, think could also make it crack when getting hot and expanding. fixing the eml would be a nightmare as the fire bricks are brittle, and there is a lot of detail on this oven, plinths, etc

Hi Del dont use the EML as you said it will expand and crack the render use 6.1.1. mix and prepare the surface as you would any smooth surface.Done quite a lot of work with fire bricks over the years building furnaces and never rendered them the brickwork is sacrificial and when damaged is just repaired render will not stand the same heat as fire brick. If you are going to use refractory cement for the render try a small area first as it is not designed for rendering and ime not sure how it will perform.
