Not done much dashing meself, only few blocked up windows here n there, got a side of a single storey extension to do though..

I have found in the past the render can sag if its even slightly too thick in places, is it best to get the top coat on reasonably thin all over?

And with using water proofer in the scratch how long would you suggest leaving the top coat before throwing the stones at it? I dont wanna go at it like a bull in a china shop and have the thing start sagging and getting pits n hollows all over!

Cheers guys, any tips apreciated as dashing aint really my thing, luckily its only the one wall as Im flat rendering the other one!

And for the "dont use waterproofer when rendering" brigade, I dont wanna hear that ;) Ive always used it in the scratch as its just the way I was taught, and it means you get plenty of play time with the top coat.

when dashing i always use cemtone freeflow waterproofer plasticiser and retarder in one best stuff for dashing

dashing has to be one of the hardest aspect to master,if it aint done right it looks terrible
i find the best stuff is the 3-1 evermix stuff for your scatch.

spa it to soon and your spa will sink to far in, too late and the spa wll bounce off and youll get ball spots.
always work to a wet edge when your throwing on also.
dont go mad with wetting your scratch coat either before your top coat on as you want a bit of sucton.

Didnt ever think there was a need to wet scratch when it has water proofer in it? barely any suction anyway! and your right with getting the timing right, thats what Im worried about!

Depends on the time of year and size of wall for how much to wet it, .....If it's a gable end in the middle of summer I soak the lot with a hose, by the time you load up the scaffold and maybe grab 5 minutes before you start, it will be ready to go, and each lift will want a sprinkle before you lay on. Even in winter - if I have to dash anything - I always damp it "at least enough to change colour". Remember that and you'll be fine:RpS_thumbup:

Like has been said if you use a waterproofer in the scratch, don't over wet it , get your mixes nice n creamy for your butter coat 6:1:1 for me , then put on a small test patch of butter coat about two foot square, just to see how receiver is reacting with the scratch, if it starts pulling in then wet down some more , and keep your mixes consistent throughout, and keep a wet edge and ....and ..... well practice makes perfect good luck, and make sure your spot boards are always well loaded out and you have half a dozen buckets of pebbles in front of you (need a good lab) and ....and ..... well practice makes perfect good luck,

it al bout the drying mate!!,damproofer gud job for dashing i tink wet it well, nothing worse than drying 2 quick
if 2 wet 2 dash let it sit til just rite.and be ready 2 rock when dashing

Not really a problem then

Thats the thing, wall aint big enough to worry about it catching me out, more of a case of knowing whens the right time to start dashing though, like when skimming you can tell my how firm the first coat is before you apply second, is there any way of knowing when its just right to start dashing?

Cheers for all the info though fellas!
