Oak Beam from plaster

Hi all,
I'm going to have a go at creating a faux oak beam from a rsj in my kitchen.

Please could I have some advice on how to achieve this.

Do I board the beam/bead then create the effect after a couple of coats?

How do I get the effects in the plaster to make it look like oak?

Look forward to any help thanks

Prob easier to clad it first with...I dunno, something like some old oak possibly?!

Also, structural steel work needs to be boarded with fire check plaster board to meet regs, or 2 layers of standard PB. There is also intumescant paint you can put on for those wanting to retain the beauty of an RSJ dangling over their breakfast bar :)
