I obviously want to open the fireplace up and I assume I rip out all that stuff in there?

Stick a concrete lintel in at the desired height?

I. Have not looked into it at all yet but it will be one of the first jobs I need to get some before I move in

Did you discover the nerve condition you had in shoulder

what are your opening dimensions?

Got so much to work out and think about

Take the surround out and knock off the plaster. There’s usually what’s called “the builders opening” which is the basic opening prior to whatever type of fire is fitted. Often additional brickwork fitted inside this that’s not structural with regards the chimney breast. I opened up both of my chimney breasts to this and popped a lintel in. Screw a bit of 4x2 into the brick course above where you want to put the lintel to stop them dropping.

This was after I removed the old 60’s fireplace in the back room. You can see the brick infill around the old back boiler and the builders opening.

So I through the 4x2 into each brick?

Yep. You’ll obviously have to see what you’re dealing with first though Danny. The main thing is to go steady. I’d rather spend a bit longer using hand tools and stitch drilling out the mortar beds than go in with an sds breaker and loosen up more than needed.

You do realise that Danny is going to end up buried under his chimney stack now, don't you? This is exactly why you don't give little bits of information to non tradesmen, it's dangerous!

Ah yes
