The death of float and set and when you (legally) had to take your labourer on the cards, marked the end of having a labourer.

They say a drummer makes a band, back when float and set was about, I would say that a good labourer did the same for a gang. We had a great labourer a wee Italian guy called Francisco AKA wee Franco, you literally didn't have to ask for anything.
He had to go back to Italy, women troubles and never came back, went through about three other labourers, until we got this old guy Joe. That lasted for about a year and he retired, that was 1996, after that I gave up plastering and went domestic.

I love that, "I gave up plastering and went domestic".
The guys that have never done continuous new build work wouldn't have a clue what you mean. Site work is where the trade as a whole learnt efficiency, nowadays the trade is haphazard at best.

I had a hand week or so ago - I don’t know what I was thinking taking a job on that requires more men—-, on third day I get a text ,sorry mate stuck in traffic (has been a accident) be about 15mins( psychic too)9am turned up ….

Smoking eating shite ,talking shite, glad when the week was over ,warning only take work on that requires yourself .
