Hi Lads

Got a hall staors and landing to do tomorrow.

The ceiling on the landing is lath and plaster and has blown, the home owners do not want to pull it down due to the mess and dust.

Im am just going to over board it and then skim.

It will be ok to over board ?

If you go by the book, then no - it must be taken down and re-boarded - the argument is that if for whatever reason the plaster comes away from the lathes (depending on the size of the ceiling) there is a lot of weight that can come to 'rest' on the back of the boards you have put up and the possibility of bringing them down aswell

In truth, I'm sure plenty of spreads would probably overboard especially if its just a landing ceiling, but use plenty of screws, 50mm preferably and you should be ok.

Cover your arse though with the customer - explain to them the risk involved and leave the ball in their court - make it quite clear that if the whole lot comes crashing down because they wanted to save a bit of mess, then you are in no way liable - mate of mine even goes so far as to get a signed written statement for such cases to completely exonerate him if the worst should happen
