Can someone shed some light on the new tax fuel/mileage system  @BetterTAX maybe? from a self-assessment point of view will you now be given 45p a mile instead of offsetting fuel receipts? Will look on hmrc site but thought I would ask here as well...

Haven't heard this, is this allowance from companies to subcontractors? Or subcontractors claimable rates, seems odd, fuel is for the van is for your work

My accountants never asked for my mileage. No doubt any change will leave us out of pocket in some way or other.

I think you can opted to do one or the other. If you do a lot if miles it's probably worth claiming the mileage

Not 100% on this but if it's mileage I think it's only 0.45 for the first 10 k miles then 0.27 thereafter, but as I said I'm not sure, I usually leave it to the accountant

I've always done it on fuel but I was talking with a plasterer the other day and he mentioned the 45p rule and it got me thinking about fuel efficiency ...:RpS_unsure:. 2 men driving to the same job, it costs one guy £5 in fuel the other £15 as he is carrying matts machines etc they will both claim the same but one has spent more :RpS_bored:

just read that back and I'm boring myself with this thread :RpS_unsure:

Does anyone do their own tax. Is it hard to do

if you're a sole trader don't bother with an accountant. Just do it yourself online. It's a piece of piss. All the boxes are there for you all you have to do is put the figures in. It will take you less than an hour and save you £250+. it will also tell you there and then how much of a return you will get. If you're not happy with the amount you can go back to previous pages and tweek the figures to give you more. That's what my friend has done on occasions I obviously would never do that

Agreed for a one man band it's straight forward .. If your unsure whether u can claim for something call the inland revenue technical team and they wwill tell you... I do mine every Yr 20 min job wen u have all your figures sorted.

Do you think using that system, your mate could almost look at the books his dodgy accountant did last year and use them figures as a guide? If he was that sort of bloke

I have a house with tennants in it. Teach 1 day a week paid by cheque. Work in a college 3 days per week payed payee, they sort the tax out with there in college.

Would that be hard to do myself

Your accountant should always show you a copy of what he's gonna submit before he does. If not ask to see them, photocopy it and jog him on after that
