So I've pretty much decided that knauf aquapanel external, finished with render will be the way forward for my timber frame build, but a question has come to mind.

How do you go about fixing items to the external wall, I'm think things like security lights, sky dish, hanging baskets. Can they be fixed through the aquapanel or must they be secured into the frame or some other way? Does drilling through the aquapanel compromise the water tight outer structure?

Only minor points but it got me thinking about the best way to do it!

Good point! I would,t use a hammer drill on render boards.

Preferably where you know there is timber behind otherwise some kind of fixings similar to what you use on plasterboard but for the outside. Maybe a blob of waterproof silicone behind whatever you are fixing to seal it.

gasket washer stainless screws you want

the weight of the objects will determine weather they need a stud fix or can be fixed into the renderboard.

Have a word with runswithscissors on here (Richard) he works on the specifying of this board and will point you in the right direction

Just use plywood in between the spacer stud like they will be doing inside for radiators, kitchen units etc etc

Hi there JMWhooper

Thanks for choosing Knauf Aquapanel Exterior.

The coments above are all equally correct......

The best way is planning where you are going to fix these items before you start and add either extra battens to the TF behind the boards, so that you fix through the boards into these extra battens, or fix noggins (ply as Blones says) to take the fixings.

Depending on the load of the item being applied (usually very lightweight because of other external loads - life wind and snow, etc), there are some specialist fixings that can be used.... not all boards have pull out loads tested, so these can be a bit of a risk, but if the wall is already up and rendered this may be the only option (short of very long fixings through everything into the TF structure / sheathing board.... most sheathing boards have a limited load as well!)

If you want a formal spec, or more assistance with detailing these areas - or even the whole project - give me a call on 07918 766577, or drop me an E mail rlord@knauf.co.uk.... Richard Lord - Knauf Drywall Aquapanel Exterior Specification Manager

Got to love that you are thinking of these points on your own build before you start the work!!! Nice one!

There are various external grade fixings that can be used - ranging from plastic split cavity plug type things to fixings that have attachments that spread out behind the board to spread the load.... But they all have fairly limited point loads when you factor in wind and snow loading (as you should) - so if you can plan in advance it is best!

I do not want to name any or coment further on an open thread - I prefer to work on each project and load individually... feel free to contact me for more assistance with Knauf Aquapanel Exterior.....

Hmmmm a very guarded reply Mr Scissors. Has there been quite a few failures in this department?

nowt to do with failures matey ~Richard cant give a specific answer on a fixing based on the framed systems build up as then it could be taken out of context and used as gospel elsewhere just because "well that bloke from knauf said it would be ok" and it may not be the correct fix method job for job

some security lights weigh more than others etc etc etc. each job needs individual specs see

LOL yeah I understand his position.

Would anyone else like to comment on what's the very best fixing into this type of board?

JFE is correct - I cannot make comments without knowing the facts. Things put on here will be on here potentially forever...........

The best way to fix to these boards is to put noggins or battens behind where the fixtures are going to be......

Danny - if you want more info, drop me an E mail (rlord@knauf.co.uk) or call me 07918766577 and I will be more than happy to assist and advise with regards to teh Knauf Aquapanel Exterior (although similar systems will advise similar..... I hope.....)

Might be a good idea to use the k rend silicone TC15 thincoat render spec on this site - colour samples available on request FOC
