My uncle is a retired firefighter. I think he really enjoyed it on the whole but saw some bad stuff too.

There was 3 full time vacancies in Bedford (25 y ago ) , they closed applications at 2000 , not such a respected employer these days with all the cuts , know a few fulltime and they all got casual work on days off

I read the other day if your a white male forget it. They lowered the pass score for foreigner and women to 60% and kept it at 70% for white men.
Mate at work just got in as retained and said it's easy to achieve the 70% pass anyways.
So what sort of imbeciles are they gonna take in at 60%.
The money ain't that great either.

You do realise that would be completely illegal and wouldn't get agreed at all? The police aren't even allowed to specify a minimum height in their application process anymore, how on earth can anyone seriously believe that the fire service would lower the testing scores only for women and 'foreigners'.

Unfortunately it is true I will try to find the source tonight. They are contesting it but....
In fact why don't you just Google it and research yourself. I did and some results came straight up.
And yes people with a immigrant background are given preference over others including English women. Cash incentives are offered on recruitment for police forces . And why are they allowed a black police confederation. Could you imagine the out rage if reversed.

I did google it before I commented actually. I couldn’t see anything. I saw the application process, the physical test, etc. From the fire services website. I didn’t come across this.
I find it extremely unbelievable that it would have been agreed. But if you’re correct, then I’m also not surprised it’s being contested.
I work for the government and yes there are lots of programmes for “progression scheme for LGBT and Ethnic minority colleagues” - which in some cases (not all) may result in a departmental bonus, as they’ve now reached X% of ethnic minorities in a senior position. But these same programmes are out there for everyone, it’s just not labelled “progression scheme for everyone.... including white folk”. And I completely agree that specifying particular characteristics are wanted for certain roles can appear wrong, there is a reason those diverse groups are wanted. I.e equal representation in parliament or for department decisions. (“We’re thinking of X change, but have no idea how this would affect our disabled staff, or trans staff.” - Only way to know is to have those people in those places. )
With regards to recruitment in this sense, the only acceptable time a foreigner would have additional time or a less passable score would be certain reasons; learning disability (as with everyone including white men, if you identify as even having asthma you get extra time in tests).
To put it into a bit more context as to why I find this so hard to believe, aside from the fact they’d be outright publicly discriminating. Is the fact we have a ‘women’s network’ - all about feminism, shouting about the rights for women and how we won the right to vote 100 years ago. They actually requested that a department gym has a ‘women’s hour’. This request was denied within less than 24 hours as it’s absolutely ridiculous and discriminating men, and some trans or gender neutral people. (Which is another topic in itself
)So for a department to say no to that, which is minor in comparison. It’s hard to believe someone would allow this.
Apologies for the essay, equality and discrimination is the field I’m in, so I enjoy the topic.

And funnily enough I came on to log myself out and hopefully delete my account, as I had the same view of you lot. Boring. Giving grief to people who ask questions.
And then calling someone a non plastering weirdo. Some of you are ok, majority need to really reevaluate your lives. Most of you need to learn how to spell as well, it’s upsetting to see grown men unable to spell the word ‘sure’ or use correct grammar.

I can say also that I work for government and be truthful in that, but have no need to glorify myself and try to gain admiration, I am content in myself and doing quite well for myself as many on here are.
Equality and diversity (misnomer) is something that every HR department deals with so nothing specialised about it, just another sociology related job. But it seems to make you progect yourself in a pretentious way.
Ironically discriminating against some on here that may suffer from dyslexia, which makes you hypocritical.
The building career path doesn't require you to create text everyday stuck in a office, so spelling and grammar skills can decline, but does not detract from the value of their opinions.
