Hello

I'm in need of a few opinions, have just started building my house and at the min I'm looking into external wall finishes. It's a modern looking house (quite a bit of glass) but the wall finish is to be white render. It's a fairly mature site with quite a few trees so am aware there is going to be quite a bit of maintenance work needing to be done to keep it white. What I'm wondering is there any new/tired and tested products would u recommend for doing the external walls with? Something which might stop/reduce the green algae (sp?) growing? Or be durable enough to last a bit of light pressure washing? I'm a complete novice when it comes to plastering and have got so confused when looking at whats available so apologies! Thanks in advance for any opinions given.

Hi Markie

There are a lot of different render system suppliers, most do finishes that have anti mold additives in the finish coat and some do self cleaning coats.... these will suit your requirements as you can wash them down with a hose and light brush, or light power wash.....

What are the walls that are going to be rendered built from? Block, timber frame, sip, etc? This will then give the guys a better understanding of what type of render to advise....

also, are you looking for someone to do the work? if so, where are you based?

I am not a render system supplier, but a render carrier board specifier, so have lots of contacts with many of the system suppliers - so if I can be of further assistance get in touch with me. Click my forum name and follow the link to my profile and you will find my phone and e mail details.

Good Luck!

Hi Markie,

As Richard said there are many different Render supplies that will suit your needs. We sell Render from JUB and many others, JUB's best product is called Nanosil which is a thin-coat Render and is self cleaning. We would happily help you out where needed and give you the benefits of using the JUB system. It also goes over the Knauf Aquapanel which is a leading name in the render carrier board industry.

Please give me a call if you need anything, the Jub system also comes with guarantees so will be able to advise you on them

for blockwork, you could render it with white sand and white cement, but you have to keep everything clean from start to finish, I assume you will prefer the more lightweight type plasters that the two guys above are more familar with, good luck

Hi John

a 6 -7mm thick render to a board is far more leightweight than a S&C coat........... even with the board....

That said - once we know what his construction type is, S&C may be the better option.

If you want more info about board and thin coat renders, get in touch...

Good Luck in 2013!

Richard

Even I am lost with all of the external render finishes that are available on the market so I can totally understand where you are coming from :)

Lots of renderers on here so you should get some good advice :)

All the best

Thanks for the info so far!! The walls needing rendered are block built. I must work out the area needing done. As with most things in the build, price is important but having said that I don't mind putting the money into something that will provide a much superior finish or save hassle down the line in a few yrs time as one of my biggest worries is discolouration due to the trees! I'm in Northern Ireland by the way. At the minute I'm only looking into what's available and what I can afford.

Thanks
Markie

Hi Markie,

if you want to give me a call on Monday or even today my mobile number is: 07891460532, could discuss as few options with you and recommend a few ways of doing it.

Maybe one of the modern systems like Jubs nano technology will suit or a synthetic finish what we on here call 'bucket coat' but the silicone version over the acrylic. Most manufacturers make it.

I am not convinced it is actually self cleaning and you may still get algae but it is probably easier to clean off. What you clean it off with regarding chemicals is something you will need to look into with the manufacturer.

Also for peace of mind consider getting the whole render system provided by one manufacturer with an approved installer. Then you will get the manufacturers warranty. Mix and match and any problems you will get suppliers blaming each other. Jub will probably have someone in your area. Weber and K-rend certainly will.

not much to add to that.
although you can use a through coloured render, just seal it with a non solvent based sealer on completion, all manufactorers make there own, that will be included under there warranty system, its uv resistant and lasts a lifetime, this will stop any greening.
it just depends on what finish you require, as regards to which type of render you opt for.

There is also the siliconised Monocouche renders which may be easier to clean. K rend is one and SAS is the other. I would think the K rend would be the cheaper though.

Parex blanc du littoral..... Fine finish and brilliant white..... I mean white as white. The best mono finish IMO and seal with para guard. Relatively inexpensive and quick for the refined sharp finish your after. No scratch coat....goes on in one seamless coat with a machine and clear sealer for longevity.
