Why is cavity compared to EWI as an equal alternative when no none can monitor it and prove wether it has filled the complete cavity and all of a sudden cavity companies are claiming they are specialist in EWI with no plastering experience so they are training their operitives to spread.Yet another set back to our trade.

the market for cavity insulation companiesas as all but dryed up,as all the homes with a cavity have been done, so they are having to go into ewi, they can train as many lads up as they want in a tiny booth in a inside warehouse doing a square metre of each, but theres no way they will go on site and produce the required standard or speed to get the job done.so get on site show them your good at your job and not just a bullshitter, tell them the rates you expect to get for your good standard, quickness and expereance and i,am sure once you can do this they will not want to let you go,after all cavity wall and ewi are totally different so all these firms are learning the trade and lets face it,its these companys who are going to be getting the work.

There is still alot of cavity to do. Ewi is just an add on o their funding
Cavity and ewi are primary measures to unlock other technologies.
I know a certian group tried in house and failed miserably

Well said tiger I would be proud of that post myself so i would:RpS_thumbup:

If the adhesive is done right when sticking the boards its not a prob. On some funded stuff they are dry fixing boards as in pin fix only and I have seen some terrible results especially with phenolic that cant be rasped.
Its all down to cost and skill level

There was a load done in berwick upon tweed about 2 years ago all over rough cast they all look good too was it anyone on here who did them?

Adhesive can go over anything as along as you put enough fixings in the eps, same procedure as dry lining and a good fitter will rasps only at angles, where ive seen certain people rasping the whole house.

what adhesive is used to fix these boards along with the mechanical fixing, what board thickness is best to use../

In some systems it is the same adheshive you plaster with and in others they have special adheshive .This is relitvely the same just another product to sell.We mainly use 100mm platnum eps which is equivilent to 120 plain eps or 80mm phenolic. Some systems use 5 fixings and some 2 it all relivent as long as you use an approved system

Its good practice to rasp the whole area for a number of reasons even if the wall is perfectly flat

Parex system with 80mm graphite for most building regs jobs. Now that they have to specify 5 pins per slab isn't it time a MUCH cheaper board adhesive was brought out for £10 a bag?!? Currently it's a bit like using flexible tile adhesive at £22 a bag to build a block wall....ludicrously expensive and ott for the task at hand.

Grey eps is my favourite
phenolic is probably the hardest when finished but is expendive
mineral wool good for curves but is inferior in lots of ways IMO

this comes into line with what Im saying in the other thread

the maite was used without pins but in this country on most applications they have to go with pinning - prob not a parex spec just what is being told they have to do. and yes on that basis they should have a cheaper base for sticking as many others have.

stupid really that base was designed to do the job but the industry says no we want pins also so then they just weaken the base (except parex obviously) pinning is a pain lets face it but alot of systems have a poor adhesive coat (mentioning no names) so its gotta be done across the board perhaps

no pun intended

Were using jub bud.

Marmorit is only two pins!

3 per board ?

does it mean you have to double up on the corners etc and as the stories go up say 4 5 6 floors do the numbers increase. obviously alot can reduce the pinning on ground floor first floor only buildings

We are on 2 story houses so the pattern may change further up.
Look on jubs website, there is the pattern on the bba.
Plus we are usin 1m x 0.5 boards.

I do agree though. Id like to pin in each corner at least

The Parex tech guy I spoke to said that no pins were required with their system, when I said I'd pin it anyway as it's my own place he said I was just going to waste time and money by doing so. What would you guys do?
Also the firm I'm going to get the insulation from will supply it in 8x4 sheets, are these to big to fit IYHO?

There is no need to pin boards upto 12m height. Over that winds are stronger and pinnin is needed. Wet fix only boardin needs sticks to wall atleast in60%, wetfix with pinnin 40%. Personally i will pin every board no matter what height for peace of mind. Wetfixed boards only can be ripped off over night by funny f***ers

i have never seen sheets that large. have you had a pull test? what pins are you going to use?

some systems need pinning even at ground level because their adhesive coat is rubbish not all systems are the same like
some of the systems with the poorest adhesive coats, if they aint pinned you can just pull the boards off the wall with little force once set

I told you maaan, I been on about this in another thread somewhere, I try to avoid pinning if poss and the systems /i use have basecoats that are designed to be the only fix

on the 8x4 sheet thing be careful the 8x4 stuff they flog in builders merchants aint the same as render grade EPS you want to check this out first with who ever render your buying also mentioned in another thread somewhere

Cheers John I'll check that out about the insulation and ditch the pins idea as well.
Is there a tech question to ask the insulation supplier about the GEPS? Such as density or whatever, rather than asking outright if it's suitable for render?

I think its FR something grade but it escapes me

ring jablite or springvale and ask them what grade they build eps to for ewi and what the differences are from conventional 8x4 found in a merchants
