Do I HAVE to batten this out

As you can see the gap between the old wall to the new brick work is fairly large. Due to the fact the house is not built square (extension added to an 1800’s house) and the new roof has been squared up by added new wall plate.

I really don’t want to batten it out and plasterboard…..but is that the only real option?

With sand and cement? What about the plastered wall below? Chip back and do 2 coats vs 1 on the bare block to try and level? That’s my concern with doing it, I’ve already got around an inch of difference between the old and new, so I wasn’t sure how to make the old level with the new without making the old way too thick.

Stick a board on the lower level to bring the wall flush. Then over board the complete wall.

Absolutely not, level it off with Hardwall plaster then finish everything with board or float coat and skim as normal. Used to be called "Dubbing out", but get the rad off first.
