hi guys what kinda adverts do you fine most effective??tried a few and find locall paper to be the best..

I paid £631 for a white quarter column Yellow pages ad last year.
i was told a simular one the year before recieved approx 15 calls a month,
i didn't get that in a year even though i was second in the plastering section!
When i asked about renewing they wanted over £800 as i had a discount the year before,so i politely told them to f**k off.

i know it caused a bit of a stir last time it was mentioned on here but i'm seriouly considering going on checkatrade. i've spoken to mates who use em and stopped random people in merchants carparks who've got a sticker on their van, everyone say it generates work.

that said, i don't advertise anywhere at the mo, just repeat work from other trades and recommendations, keeping fairly busy.

Remember to ask where they got your name from - that way you get to see how many leads your getting for your ££££s per advert ;)

I think yellow pages will b a waste of money today when everyone has a computer with an internet connection
i used yell.com tgho and i think i had 5 jobs in a year from it and it cost me 200 quid .
But if ure thinking long term any advert is good as i personally think any 1 happy costumer is a posible 10 or even 100 in the future .
I find the local newspaper the best as well and i spent 40 £ a month on it .
Flyers r cheap and chearfull u spend about 20(or even less) quid on ink and paper to make abut 1000 or so spend a little time when ure not working flyering and u will find that u also saved money that u didnt have to pay the jym to get fit :).
I also used ,,Rated people,, site 3 years ago and spent a lot of money just to get a chance to quote on jobs and that is on top of a membership fee . I only had 1 job wich fortunatley for me was a 2 bed flat ( wallpaper to remove , skimm and paint) . I stoped payng for that service/site ,,Rated people,, cos i tghout it was a rippoff
that u had to pay £ 10 or even more just to quote on a job and would not go near it again . On the other hand that single job i had from the site generated so much work that in the present 40 % of mi work comes from that single job.
In the end if u advertise about 2 years and make sure u leave the customer happy , all u will need from then on is stikers on ur van .

The best advertising i have found by far is the good old Church Parish Mags
Cost peanuts (£500 Per year = 12-15 villages) Older people, the ones with the money to spend get these
magazines and you also get recommended around the village, most properties are large, customers are often too old and wealthy to do their own painting after the plastering has dried so you can get the decorating work as well. The painting is the biggest bonus of all (easy work like being on holiday ;) because of course if you can pee you can paint. ;D Best single decision i have made since starting up on my own.

They are a goldmine..... mine is £220 for half a page for the year. Call after call after...... must have done £10K of profit from that alone in the last 12 months. Then once your in the door you get repeat work... (if you are any good lol)

yellow pages

i used to have a fair sized ad a few yrs ago (1998-2002) did average about 8 calls a week

now just 1/8 th page ---lucky to get 8 per yr

im'e not renewing again---

as said above----the paper directories are losing out to the internet...(thinking about it can't remeber last time i used the book)

not tried local parish mag but may give it a go

This may take some explaing steve but here goes.
I have spent the last 2 years getting into these magazines, any job ive had in any village i have asked the customer if they get their local mag and they nearly always say yes. These mags are often given free to the villagers and everyone in any village likes to know wants going on locally.
I am lucky enough to live in kent (maidstone county town) and i am surrounded by villages although i live on a council estate i dont have to travel far,10-15 mins to work, all down country lanes.
Of course it depends on where you live but most people dont live too far from the countryside
All the mags ive got in so far (About 12 or so) dont have any other plasterers advertising so no competition at all.
This beats site work any day. Last ten years owned one escort van only did 30k getting to work this also included pricing and picking up materials! I have only worked in the town where i live and these mags have ensured ive stayed in work.I priced a job last night Hall stairs and landing £1000 and got it and they are willing to wait 5 weeks for me. This was down to the fact they got me from their parish mag and were not interested in getting a second price as they trust the advertisers in their mag ;) Takes some detective work sometimes to get in these mags but once your in one, if you always do a good job word soon spreads around the village and beyond. Best way to get new customers that i have found by a mile.

so how do i advertise in the mags? ;D
Ask in the nearby villages where you live. If the best form of advertising is word of mouth then getting into a parish mag is no different. MAG=WORK=CASH=BEER ;D

Yes you can also get the parish mag by going to the church but dont go plasterered the vicar wont like it

my local mosque magazine is looking for
advertisers, £1.99 only with free can drink boss

Irish didnt realise you were into Ha-al plastering. Good on you pal !! Ha-alwall is great stuff to work with isn't it?

u would think that yellow pages is poop but some of the jobs we have done this year actually came from the book. The website brings builders to your sights and younger people but i would say the book is better at the moment. They put a special number there aswell to monitor you phonecalls

yeah i fell for the call monitor, it just meant the second my ad ran out anyone who had that number could no longer get hold of me.oh and they could also tell me that i recieved about 15 calls in a year for a £631 lay out.
