Is this acceptable finish? Work is done, but not sure about quality

I was a newbie like you but the good people here have welcomed me with open arms and and I feel I am part of the clique now. I recently had half of my house replastered and though it wasn't as bad as your situation, it wasn't up to our standard The experts here deemed it was rough. So I...

    Hi all

I know Jack s**t about plastering but I might give it a go. Will probably do a better job than most of the chancers :P

    Hello all

After getting some helpful advice, I've decided to stay here and say hello to the wider audience... Hello..

You would add hardwall in to the cavity as well or you would fil it with form? If it's the former, you are not worried about Hardwall being close to the outside elements? I think the end of the cavity is the other other side of the door frame.

Fellas, I've found another plasterer. He said he can fill it up with Hardwall and reskim. On his profile on the website, it says he has qualifications, he's been there for over 10 years and has loads of good reviews. He wants £200 which I think is a fair price? Question. Should the backing...

    Is this acceptable?

The decorator has done excellent work to be fair. Even though he recommended the guy (basically said he's worked with him in other projects and he's OK) he said he was happy for to go with any plasterer. I just think it's not fair if he has to do all the work to sort out the plasterer's mess...

    Is this acceptable?

The bricks look dry to me however it is right next to the front door frame. so wall might be getting a lot of moisture. Maybe I was exaggerating when I said it was like a paste, OK not that wet but it wasn't dry/hard. Didn't notice any patches when the lining paper was there and don't remember...

Is that the going rate here for a smal job ;) And how do I know you are not a chancer? :P
  9. C

    Is this acceptable?

So I've removed all the bonding (some of it was very wet, like a paste) and now it's back to the bricks. Area is about 150cm x 40cm. Needs to have Hardwall or Limitelite as the backing plaster and then reskim up to the rest of the wall. I'm thinking it's less than a half a day's work. What...

Bit fussy? Jesus, I just want a decent job. Not expecting a perfect job (we are aware the old walls aren's straight) but there shouldn't be noticeable bulging in corners. And not paying £750 buddy :p We are going to have to give the decorator more money to straighten some of the crappy...

So here's an update. The guy game today and he tried to bullshit me again and I called him out, there was an argument and he left. Also saw one of his guys emptying the bucket with dirty water in to the toilet after cleaing trowels and stuff. Don't think we'll have them in our house again...

*Grabs pop corn* This thread is entertaining. You plasterers are a funny bunch.
  14. C

    Is this acceptable?

The guy originally suggested Hardwall to fill the 150cm x 30cm area (after removing Bonding his guys had added) next to the front door. I suggested Limelite but he hasn't used that before so he's planning to use sand and cement. Would you choose Hardwall over sand and cement? If so why?

I feel like you have been bullying the poor bloke :(

    Is this acceptable?

In the future how do I select a good plasterer? Recommendations are no longer good enough (goes for all builder types). Check they have some basic trade qualifications Check if they are part of Checkatrde/trading standards? Check their previous work - we actually did this with the current...

    Is this acceptable?

So gents, now that we are friends. Can I come here again for your sound advice? ;) That was aimed at the decent plasterers, not the chancers obviously.
  18. C

    Is this acceptable?

Yeah I bet a lot of you are chancers :P
  19. C

    Is this acceptable?

The plasterer said he'll use sand/cement as the backing coat. I was happy with it because I had seen that suggested in lots of places for external walls.
  20. C

    Is this acceptable?

Haha I wish I could skim. I'd do it myself!
  21. C

    Is this acceptable?

I don't know what they look like. I think they had those big Refina trowels. If he uses Limelite it will be to build the wall back up and then multifinish will go on top. So does it matter if it's (Limelight plaster) smooth or whatever?
  22. C

    Is this acceptable?

    What trowel?
  23. C

    Is this acceptable?

Yes I would put these guys in that category. Obviously had we known that we wouldn't have hired them. Anyway it doesn't seem to be the worst job. Mate, can you please tell me if Limelight is easy enough to use for your average plasterer? Anything they need to do differently?
  24. C

    Is this acceptable?

I don't want to go around in circles. I have already explained the situation. I don't have much confidence in these guys anymore. He's already offered to re-do with Hardwall but apparently it's not suitable either. I think he and hig guys are average plasterers and I'm not sure he's used...
  25. C

    Is this acceptable?

Yeah that's what I gathered. There have been a number of helpful replies from a few posters including yourself which is much appreciated. I will suggest Limelight to the plasterer. Not sure if he has used it before. Is it easy enough to use for your average plasterer? Anything they need to do...

    Is this acceptable?

:) Isn't using lime plater a specialist job? I'm not sure if these guys have used lime. I've read Limelite is a good alternative and easier to use. Is that true? I honestly don't know what's invovled and don't have a lot of experience/knowledge about this stuff (I'm your average joe and I just...

Come on fellas, what material should be used to replace old loose lime plaster (30cm x 150cm area) on the wall next to the front door?
  30. C

    Is this acceptable?

I've read that Hardwall absorbs less moisture than Bonding. But Sand and cement seems to be what's recommended in most places after a google search. However I've also seen Limelite suggested as a replacement for Lime plaster. Not sure what's better!
  31. C

    Is this acceptable?

Alright mate, yes I think it's pretty clear he's not a great plasterer and some of his guys are even worse but at least he's willing to come back and sort it out. In his defence I think it was one of his guys that put bonding there and re-skimmed but he should check the work of his guys. He was...
  32. C

    Is this acceptable?

He said the rest of the wall is lime plaster. Shall I ask him to use lime plaster in that section? I've also read about Limelite.. Need help from you guys please. Sand/cement, Hardwall, Limelite or something else? :)
  33. C

    Is this acceptable?

I don't have confidence in him and his guys anymore after what we've seen. I don't think they know the right material to use for various surfaces. I reckon they just use Bonding all the time. However he does seem like he wants to make things better, at least at the moment. We withheld £750 of...

  35. C

    Is this acceptable?

Yeah they are solid brick walls with no cavity (like all Edwardian and Vicotorian houses?). Yeah little dry spots are appearing but we are worried we are going to have damp issues in the future even if it fully dries up in a few days. Shall we ask him to hack it off and redo with something...
  36. C

    Is this acceptable?

What do you recommend we do? Doesnt' lime plaster also absorb moisture? The fact that it was bone dry before, doesn't it mean, that section is unlikely to be damp?
  37. C

    Is this acceptable?

Let me be clear. That was the only area where there was clearly blown old lime plaster. Our guess was it got damaged when electrician chased the wall. As I said before, we tapped on the same wall and we couldn't hear the hollow sound anywhere else on that wall. On ther walls there were some...
  38. C

    Is this acceptable?

Guys what should we do to move forward? The main plasterer is supposed to come tomorrow. What should we tell him?
  39. C

    Is this acceptable?

I can see there are dry spots starting to appear so maybe it will be fully dry next week but the worry I have is we are going to have wet patches there. The old lime plaster there even though loose was dry and there was no damp on the brick wall behind it when the old plaster came off so maybe...

    Is this acceptable?

MakeItSmooth, we are where we are. You already made your point about reskimming over old walls is a bad idea. I must say we had the old walls in prevoius property reskimmed and did not have a problem. I guess those plasterers did a better job. Anhyway back to the current situaiton. This section...
  41. C

    Is this acceptable?

Hi gents, I need to ask you about another section of the wall. There was some old loose lime plaster next to the front door and we took it off. (probably 30cm x 150cm area). The plasterers put bonding there to fill the hill and then reskimmed. It's been almost a week but this patch is still...
  42. C

    Is this acceptable?

Granted the picture rails weren't there but I still think they were better skilled plasterers. Edit - so you reckon the new plasterers have done a decent job from the pictures I've posted? (given the obstacles they had to work with). Couple of other guys in here seem to think it was an average...
  43. C

    Is this acceptable?

Because we didn't like the lining paper joints. Also we thought by reskimming, we'd have smoother walls that we would only need to repaint. In our previous property, we had the walls reskimmed, and they looked bloody great and there were hardly any cracks after 6 years living there. So we...
  44. C

    Is this acceptable?

Mate those old walls look horrible. In comparison our old walls were 100 times better. Seriously they were pretty smooth walls without many cracks. I accept that on close inspection they might not be that smooth.
  45. C

    Is this acceptable?

I think you misunderstood me. I thought it was going ot be a video about a top plasterer at work so when I watched it I was surprised. Thought maybe you attached the wrong link. All good. I know exactly what you are saying. The job could have been better. At least the guy is willing to come...
  46. C

    Is this acceptable?

Oh I see. I'll speak to the decorator tomorrow. I trust his work a lot more than the plasterers work. The plasterer is supposed to come back on Friday to sand down.
  47. C

    Is this acceptable?

It wasn't cheap. And we had couple of other plasterers come around to look at the job and they all quoted around the same price. They didn't mention to us that the job would be a lot more difficult or we would get a bad finish having picture rails and architraves in there.
