@rycarr It does sound like you need some advice. Firstly, it is a naive way to think that you can charge VAT when clearly you are not registered for it. Why would you think that? Secondly, you should declare any earnings, cash or not, on your tax return... you all know this... and I'm sure...

Make sure you keep all your receipts, proofs of purchase (that's all of you!). Get in good habits now as you start out! (Can be offset against your tax bill).

@KevRM not really - it would show the amount but not that it was paid as tax. There should be no problem with your contractor issuing the tax voucher. If he doesn't want to, you'd have to wonder why.
