Does anyone as a sole trader that supplies there own materials work out of anything smaller than a transit without making it hard for themselves???

My vans in its twighlight years so been thinking id like to try and work out of something smaller as don't work with my old partner anymore so don't have duplicate tools etc in van.

However been trying to start keeping less in van to see what I could get away with having. Took loads of things that are for specific jobs ie ladders and battons for stairs. Mortar stand for hand knocking render. Even thrown away 10yr old spotboard and stilts probabley regrett.

And ive still got bloody loads in. How do you do it? Not fussed if cant fit 8x4s in bloody hate em on my own anyway!

you could get away with something like a tranny connect with a roof rack for boards then you can get 8x4s if you wanted

Dont think i could get by with anything smaller than transit size van? Had a small van years ago with my old firm i worked for.it was a pain in the ass tbh zombie.

ended up a van for the jobbin joiner we had at the time.
Suited him fine...bag of tools, some power tools?, stool etc in the back ..ladders,timber on roof rack.

I'm using a transit connect at the min and before that had a astra van (still got it acutally:RpS_unsure:) you just need to be organised is all. Just think back to years ago when you used to go to work with a haversack full of tools and got by alright :RpS_thumbup:. for rendering jobs i might put a trailer on the back for water butts etc and for new build stuff i have some 100lt water butts which go in the van no bother.

I've got a transit connect and there's stuff in there I ain't seen since I put it in, ie my Darby it's right up by the bulk head no way I'm getting to it

I have a partner and i get by ok with it can b a pain sometimes if i need a load of mats i just get them delivered to job worst problem i find is if you have all your gear on and need one specific thing thats always at the back and you have to dig everything out to get it

Plus **** sorting scaff every time we always have a van with all the scaff boards to do a decent ceiling put crates , trestles in garden cos there a ******* but all to there own , i have a long wheel base maxus ldv and me dad lwb tranny, be prepared . Any decent domestics u need at least a small tranney . Done it with a kangoo and was no good so went to a old tranney short base still a nightmare now got the lwb . nd i wudnt go back . Last day of my holidays booooo last wiped out balcony finishing the beers ! So sorry for spelling ......

All depends on the person though , i know i wouldnt go back smaller thou . The builder i know jus got a new sprinter had a old one before that but give me interest when he got the new one , look very good and thats my next van . Couldnt do with a small one again least got to be sum tranny size ...... Lwb for me thou

I often wonder about having a smaller van, cheaper fuel, tax insurance etc.More often than not you dont need half the gear on ya van, then 1 day you do and its there.
I think most of us have had Escorts at 1 time, great van.

Iv got a vauxhall combo and it can be a pain in the arse with tools n materials I an just about squeeze tools 5 6x3 boards n 2 bags but it tight got roof rack for bigger jobs.

Ive thought that i think its the appearance of it , more rounded etc .... Surely not smaller thou cud be rong thou .......

Got a new shape partner, tool tube and ladders on roof rack and I'm good to go, can fit 6 x 3 boards in easy but just get my brother to drop off any 8 x 4's if need be

I used to know a plasterer that lost his license and would take the bus :RpS_scared: he'd have his podger and tub and a back pack full of hand tools. He would get customer to get materials. He was always working , haven't seen him around for a good while :RpS_unsure:

That's because you're to posh to take the bus nowadays. Or is it because the bus seats are to harsh for your poor sore battered arse?

I know an old boy who does that. He tapped my shoulder in tesco months ago. Said hello then walked past with his bucket of tools in his hand and his shopping on top lol

i wouldnt go back to having a normal tranist (out of choice anyway) just found i carried too much **** ive had my truck now for 3 or 4 years and ive got everything i need in the back for most scenarios, skim, screed, render, float, cove, tack aswell as a good pile of about 16 or so dust sheets, just go to be organised everything in its place and a place for everything

some food for thought chaps...thanks:RpS_thumbup:

its a weird one for me on the 1 hand ive just carried into a job along with the essentials 2 diff size speedskims, a 6ft straight edge and a 4ft darby, a sponge float and a scarifier just to straighten/ patch up a few areas that have come off with the old tillers before being retiled im not even proper floating or skimming the bathroom etc it out just gobboing it up.

On the 1 hand I could probabley have got by without all of them but equaly can argue a case for using each 1 at some point in the process etc?

I dunno!!!!:RpS_confused:

I started with an astra estate it worked alreet till asda shopping day. Unloading all my gear. Multi finish all over my baguette. Then got a tranny thinking there's loads of room then you just fill it up with more shite

I was getting right excited then jace:RpS_thumbup: right up until you said roofrack for beads and boards!.....booooooooooooooo!!!!:RpS_thumbdn:

boards actually go in the back over the tools then run a bungee over the centre bar over the ends of the boards and hook round the tow bar only really beads, coving, and ladders that go on the roof
