Found this very interesting statistic regarding the shortage of tradesmen in the UK?
Read to bottom of list and you'll see what I'm getting at

The percentage fall in the number of tradesmen since 2009 to December 2013
Plumbers - down 25 per cent
Bricklayers - down 19 per cent
Window cleaners - down 18 per cent
Joiners - down 17 per cent
Roofers - down 11 per cent
Gardener - down 9 per cent
Builders - down 7 per cent
Carpenters - down 7 per cent
Painter and decorators - down 5 per cent
Plasterers - up 3 percent.

It's definitely time plastering courses were STOPPED
My hard earned skills have become a joke thanks to the greedy knobsticks who run these mickey mouse courses!

its the people running most of the courses who are to blame, conning people out of money.. basically fraud...

I have enough to worry about , don,t tend to read to much into things myself , if some guy is going to take my work that has done a weeks course , then it is me that is the ****, not him ,imo

I would agree with you Cassie i see this in guys that think the can spread and have been on courses! Plaster in a week... What a joke!

My pal was stuck and I was too busy,he got in three recommended young English spreads to do a small job in Streatham ,they were slow as old women he said but full of themselves and their ability,

What I'm finding is that everyone thinks because I've been doing my course for six months they think I should be able to plaster there house / ceilings ect. I can't see how anyone can learn in such a time.

To plaster over 4 sheets of plasterboard ,is a walk in the park after a few weeks , it is not open heart surgery , but there are so many other parts of the trade to learn

All your doin on site is skimmin over boards and there's nothing else to it
That's the problem some lads have never done anything different appart from skimmin boards on site and think they are plasterers, it's not their fault they know no different.

When did i say that mate , :RpS_confused: i have been drinking :RpS_blushing:

so when did i say" So was I but you said there is more to it which on site there isn't" out of that :RpS_confused:

I was slated a while back for criticizing newbies posting asking for quantities, prices etc. My opinion is this; plastering can be explained by using an analogy to cooking, its knowledge of ingredients, experience, a constant learning curve that makes a good spread/chef. You can teach someone the basic skills of cooking but that does not make them a chef, its the same with plastering. If a "qualified" chef gets a job in a new kitchen and mid service asks the head chef how much milk to use in a sauce he will probably get a pan chucked at him. I am an experienced plasterer and I have questions all the time and I am always learning, but I dont think someone can call them self a plasterer if they do not understand the fundamentals .

You drunk? You said there was so many other parts of the trade to learn which is why I said there isn't on site skimmin boards

Window cleaners a trade ? :RpS_lol:

window cleaners, chimney sweeps etc are called tradesmen.
plasterers, bricklayers, carpenters where called skilled tradesmen,
then the painter, artexer, ground worker etc where called semi skilled, they earned three quarter rate,
then came the plasterers labourer, mixer driver, hod carrier etc they where paid a few pence an hour above the builders labourer who was the lowest paid..
there was a time when the building trade went on strike for equal pay for painters. you can guess the amount of piss taking the painters got!

What's the pink stuff? Isn't plastering a craft rather than a trade?@malc

i have heard a plasterer called a craftsman,i have also heard a plasterer called a skilled tradesman. i will have to get my indentures out find out what it states!

activair plaster - which absorb germs etc in the air etc but not sure if it sells well - I think perfect for classrooms and hospitals ,etc and only painted with breathable paint

we have had a post about activair plaster before. if it can absorb particles from the air it will become clogged and solid. after a period of time.
in my home we have air purifing unit in each room, the filters need to be changed regular as they are full of particles.

hi malc - there aren't many of us left that completed bound apprenticeships - :RpS_thumbup:

Yes plasterers always learning, even the most experienced ones such trying so many products like the new pink and black stuff at BG tour

hi Ryan totally agree with you - even the experienced plasterers (us dinosaurs) are still learning - it also takes a good plasterer to know their limits :RpS_thumbup:

Be careful there are painters and then their are painters. We know by the comments on here the same applies to our trade Ryan

although I partly agree ,you still have to push forward and do things your unsure of, to move forward with the times and learn new techniques along with new materials and such, we would still be using lathes if we didn't move on,99% of time we all learn something new by chance :RpS_thumbup:
