Fermacell boards

Looked at a job today where the owner has created flats out of an old office block and now it is all finished he has realised there is a problem with noise transfer between floors. He has bought loads of Fermacell boards with which he would like me to price overboarding all the ceilings then skimming them. It is only a 1 bed flat on the first floor which needs doing but the place is brand new and ready to move into! So, these boards are obviously really heavy (tried to pick one up but struggled greatly 8 x4) and will need cutting in half first before I can even get them up the stairwell. Can I overboard using regular drywall screws of the correct length and can I then just tape joints and skim? This is one part of the ******* job! He also has two other flats nest door which both have good size cellars, both of which have about 5 and a half foot head room and both of which need the ceilings DOUBLE boarded in fireline and then skimming. All the joists are covered in pipes and cables which will need boxing in or moving! I will have to spend all day on my knees as I am 6'4" and cannot stand up anywhere, even between the floor joists! I am thinking the price needs to be huge as not going to get into a rhythm using such materials and in such tight spaces and I don't really need the work anyway. Anyone got any advice on the Fermacell boards as never come across them before? How do I cut them? Will it blunt the blade of whatever I use to buggery? Oh yeah, nearly forgot he wants it all starting on Monday if possible!! LOL He can't get hem signed off until these works are completed

To be honest he is wasting his time in terms of noise reduction these will make next to no difference at all.

They are a twaz to cut I can tell ya that much I've used a jigsaw to cut em in the past an you will need a joint stick for the joints the jointing compoundis horrible to use just my opinion

There is a Fermacell thread on here somewhere. Normal drywall screws will probably snap off as they won't pull into the board as it is really hard. Fermacell screws have smaller, tapered heads. They are also expensive, about £9 a 1000 loose and £20 for 1000 collated. If you use the tapered edge boards you won't have to glue the joints. I use a circular saw attached to a hoover to cut them, but there is still a fair bit of dust created. Cut outside if possible.

we used a jig saw on a slow speed, as the blade over heats and goes blue on a faster setting,
you will need the fermacel screws, they have a cutting edge on the underside of the head that cuts a hole allowing it to countersink itself
they are excellent at sound insulation, the edges have to be glued with the fermacel glue,

Hi
If refer to the BG white book for the DB aquatic spec .
To sum it up there needs to be a void between habitable rooms/floors which you can insulate with acoustic insulation before even talking about the board spec . I would get him to send the boards back and get the blue DB boards 12.5 mm or 15 mm all can be cut and screwed with standard drywall screws , although tougher than standard boards still nowhere near as difficult as the fermacel.
Also you will need to acoustic seal .

otherwise id sack the job off unless he's paying a top day rate and he get him to confirm in writing that you've have advised another spec for acoustics .

all the best mate

We've got a good size house to price up using Fermacell, roughly what sort of extra time does this gear take to cut/fix over standard board?
Having watched some clips on Youtube I'd guess at anything between three to four times as long with the slow cutting and gluing of joints.

I charge double the tacking rate andy. It's almost a two man job as the boards are about 44kg each. Fastest way to fix would be with an air stapler. I think you need to use 38mm staples. Even the Fermacell screws leave a burr around them which needs to be scraped back before jointing. The staple pulls the boars surface in leaving a clean hole.

i would charge at least double if not more, cutting fermacel is comparable to cutting ply ! its time consuming

Yes its FST, the joint glue is a sh1tbag to cut back if its proud, but saying that if its done right its a very good finish
