Prices are the same here, you price the job as competitively as you can for a 100% finish and you still get blew out of the water. what are these men doing? price seems king at the minute tho, reputation seems to count for little. nobody is out to make big profits now like, just a fair days pay. if these men keep doing work at these prices hopefully they will soon realise it does not add up.

I dont know where this current situation will end, competion is healthy but it is getting ridiculous. People are telling us of 50 and 60 quid a spreads and it is damaging the trade. These guys are often cash only without the overheads of legit sole traders like the rest of us. We lost a job recently and I had the chance to look at his work, I looked down every angle and searched the walls for misses. It was bang on, yet he was charging the guy 60 a day.

January is hard enough for us all, bad weather and limited domestic trade. What I hate most about January is that its followed by a short month (February 28 days) sometimes feb will only have 18-20 weekdays. You have to prepare for this but that is easier said than done. If your in this game for the long haul, the most important thing to do if work isnt flowing your way is to keep your sanity

60 a day if that is all they want i would give him that to pick up the dog **** on our local playing field!

If your good at plastering and charging 60 a day that's worse than being a cowboy who don't know his arse from his elbow. Shows a lack of confidence surely

Bang on.
These numpties are just skimmers. No idea about the rest of the trade, and nine times out of ten no idea about skimming either...

Yes Kev, he is getting a take it or leave it price. Nothing silly just a little extra for the inconvenience.

Priced up 180 metres of k-rend, agreed it with client. He rang back 2 days later to say someone will do it £2 a meter cheaper can a match it. I politely declined, but why the hell would someone accept a price then continue getting prices.

Cos they're out of order, don't know how long youve been plastering oli, buts this is something u will have to get used too,it's never in the bag until You have started the job I'm afraid.

I agree there super. Ive been plastering 15 years and my workmate 20 years, we say it all the time. havent got the job til your doing it. Got 3 decent jobs priced up but wont relax til we are on site.

Yea oli I know that feeling, even right up to the day before your due to start.

even then it isn't a dead cert you have the job, ever turned up to do a job and some other fukcer is there already doing it ?? i have

Yea kev i have ,I'm a bit more wiser now tho, I like to think I know who the messers are now.

30 years plastering and got to say this is the worst I have ever seen it. Practically every job priced not getting. There are guys out there doing work for practically hee haw. Peoples reputation used to be king not anymore,as cheap as you can get it. Plastered an extension for mate in December.main contractor said good job how much do u charge a m2. Told him,he says too dear..he said I have a plasterer but he ain't as good as your finish but he is cheaper and I am not to concerned about quality. There u go. Says it all. Keep plugging away guys, there is guys busy out and they just might not be any better than you but that's life. Let's hope it turns soon.

i,m 30 years time served come from a family of plasterers ,when its good its great trade ? but as of the last few years its been a struggle !! i,m already making plans to lets say diversify !! dont rely on plastering as a sound career if your self employed !!its not a good career move ! one day when you cant work anymore (not that theres any at the mo)unless you have made big provisions you will be up sht creek !! get training for something else before its to late !!!!

oh and before any body says i,m not being negative just practical ! multi traded is the way to these days it seems ?

Multi trade is the way to do it and try and get qualified to do something else if you can,too many people chasing not enough work,i have been putting razor wire up today outside a car park quite enjoyed it but my hands havnt.

no it shows a man who has bills to pay and mouths to feed and is desperate.
dont knock it till you ve been in the same situation.

Yes Jan/Feb are bad times was on this web sight the other day and guys were bidding for **** jobs judging by some of there names they left they seemed to be from overseas so Tesco here we come.

went to price a job the over week ..only small extension with some work in main house. worked out the price and rang the bloke only to be told my price was miles over what someone else was going to do it for ! so i thought i would see the difference in price and asked him ..i could'nt stop laughing when he told me this bloke would do it on day work £30 a day!!

cleaning bogs gets more money than that and you still get to spread shite all over the place

offer a cheeky reach around see what he says
Fed Up !

I carnt believe how much this trade has been devalued by chancers, part time firemen etc etc, thirty years ago we were one of the highest paid trade out and when i started out thirty years ago i thought i was the only doing it.Now everybody is a plasterer and new vans are appearing daily out of the woodwork claiming to be plasterers, personally i blame the short courses who farm these people out on the domestic market and determine the prices for the rest of us trying to make a living.I have a few things i can fall back on and the sooner i get out of this trade the better.

hollybank im 100% with you on this all these course dont help... think i might be a sparky next week ...week after im going hetas

Snap.
I'm forty next week and I'm buggered if I'm gonna fight with dole bashers and foreigners just to do such a hard bloody job for the next 25 years when its dying anyway. Shame really. I've just started really enjoying it again.

This year. I'm out. (again)

its knowing what to do ...got a few friends going the hetas way installing stoves ,but have a mate that has done it for years and he can't beleave the amount of people doing that now

I'm going back to college in September to do a HNC in construction. Might not lead to anything but I'm trying. Will do as many courses as possible. Can't see the point in chasing other trades and being a jack of all. I pride myself in being good at what I do and if I'm scratching my way through a trade I've no real experience in I'll feel no better than the chancers that f***ed the plastering trade up.

Rossi seems some people are doing well ,,take a look at golden trowel seems like there courses seem to be getting filled .

Thats always an indicator of something dying....the teachers start making more money than the people actively doing the work.

I saw the exact same thing happen at the peak of the property boom, when all you saw were courses in 'how to make money from property'.

I am trying to buy an auction property myself, its crazy in london at the min, sold boards are everywhere, every decent property is been fought over, deeeeep pockets out there, hard to find something with a potential profit......
