Rendering is a generic term/word used for many many different applications ranging from sand and cement render, lime render, monocouche render and or acrilic renders they are generally but not confined for outside use. render was employed as it was a cheaper alternative to laying face bricks.
Rendering is also a term used in computer graphics... hope this helps... ;)
 
I didnt realise render meant so much:
