is there really need to tank a wetroom

as i said in the title to be honest, got a job to quote its a wet room in an old farmhouse just wondering if tanking is really needed or will i get way without it. oh yeah its on a concrete ground floor.

waterproof it with two coats sand/cement with waterproof, or batten and aqua board.. lots of options..

The tilers normaly tank it these days.
