Covering Artex ceiling with EasyFill

Hi All! I have Artex on a lot of ceilings in my house and I want to achieve a flat finish. Before you suggest it, no, at the moment I cannot afford for a professional to do this, otherwise I would.

In one room, I have scraped the ceiling off and plastered with MultiFinish.
Never again.
The stuff is painted with silk paint and it was a nightmare to get everything off. Skimming with MultiFinish was equally as bad and it has taken me ages to achieve a decent finish.

So my question is: can I just use EasyFill or any other kind of joint/filler compound to cover the artex in the other rooms?
The advantage over MultiFinish is that, if the result is bad, I can easily sand it to get a decently smooth finish.
I would not do it on a wall because fillers are more friable so it would be prone to dents, however, I don't expect to go around banging my head over the ceiling: that should not be a big problem.

I've read many posts saying that joint/filler compounds are not OK for an entire wall... but I don't understand why? The stuff that is sold as ready-mix plaster, is essentially a joint/filler. So if that is OK to use for a wall, what is the difference with EasyFill or similar products?

So you can't afford a professional, but can afford loads of bags of easifill?
Easifill/fillers aren't sold as a ready mixed plaster ..two totally different things.
Best advice...save up your pennies and get it done properly.

But I have a feeling your gonna give it a go anyway:X3:

~If you don't want to follow Fatarm's advice I think you should keep going with the multi and send us the pics for advice & tips. By the time you have done all your ceilings you might be quite good at it.
A householder came on here after some chancer had done their entire house in easifill, and it wasn't good.

Are they though? The finish and consistency looks very similar they are both very easy to sand. It seems to me that the ready mixed plaster is more similar to joint compound rather than MultiFinish which does not sand and has a very different finish.

Last time I checked, one bag of 10kg Make Good joint compound was 13.99£
let's say I need 3 per room that would be 42 pounds.
Considering that a reputable plasterer quotes 10 times that, you can see why I am looking at this option. We have several things to fix in the house and some of those have to be done by a professional for sure. On the rest of them, if I can save money, I will try at least :)
I am not going to call a painter to sand a re-paint my doors, I can easily do it myself. Will it be as good? Surely not.

But I have a feeling your gonna give it a go anyway:X3:
I don't know to be honest. I am very, very tempted to give it a go but I'm scared it might turn out to be an horrible choice. Nobody really elaborates on why it would be bad, they just say it is.

Yeah, sanding artex ceilings is a great idea. What harm can it do?

Oh, wait, artex is notorious for containing asbestos!!!!

Seriously, that is a really, really, really dumb idea. Don't take that personally - I'm simply calling it what it is.

If I thought you could locate the joists correctly, I'd suggest you overboard the ceilings with new plasterboard (so you wouldn't need to disturb the existing artex at all), but I'm not at all confident that you'd know how to do that correctly.

Listen, you're likely to get quite a few spreads giving you a hard time for what you're planning to do.
I'm not going to do that, but I am going to honestly tell you that this has 'disaster' written all over it, added to which, asbestos is not something to be trifled with.

Think very carefully about how you move forwards with this. VERY carefully.

One thing you can absolutely discount as an option is sanding your artex. Absolutely insane idea and using a professional asbestos-certified dust extractor does not change that - it's still an absolutely insane idea.

Good luck.

Reckon £300 worth of easyfill might do it
Maybe you have got it wrong. I wasn't speculating to cover the ceiling with the actual bags of easyfill

I've never said I'd sand artex. What I've said is skimming and THEN sand the skim to make it flat where there it's not flat. I cannot do that with multifinish because it does not sand well hence the idea of using something that can be sanded, like joint compound (easyfill or something similar)

Jeezus...
Covering Artex ceiling with EasyFill

If you put filler on artex and then sand the filler, you're ALSO going to be sanding the peaks of the artex at the same time, clever clogs!

I take back my diplomatic approach, earlier.

You've been warned but you still think you know better.

You're a danger to yourself and anyone who lives with you.

Calm down mate, the ceiling has been tested and is negative. Even if it was positive, do you have any idea how remote is the possibility of releasing significant amounts by sanding something that is on top of it? Even if you were to scrape by accident the surface by what… 0.5mm that would be nothing…. Come on!

watta berk,,,as someone said save ya pennies and get it done properly,in the meantime dont look up and lay on ur front when in bed

How much would you charge oot of interest mate? Asking for a friend
eh,,what over pre scraped chalky artex ceilings,,,,,depends on a few things 1 wether i like customer,,,2 if the scabby arsed dog bites,,,3 if it smells ,,,i could go on,,generally i dont do pj,s

good cos like i said i generally dont do PJ,s
have you read the post properly,,fella talking about fine filling a scraped artex ceiling/ceilings,,hes tried plastering one and f**k*d up big style,,i said save ur dough n get em done properly later,,your talking about tape n jointing plasterboard or have i gone really thick all of a sudden and got a bit of alzi,s coming on strong

Do you work with a
bricklayer who can build a wall without a level.
painter who can paint a room without sanding
carpenter who can stud a wall without noggins
electrician who can wire a house without cable clips

No matter what advice is given this guy isn’t going to listen
To be fair I’ve not been given many advices so far. The common thinking seems to be that is a bad idea “because”. Fair point about the cost is filler vs multifinish. The rest seems to be background noise…
