Hi All

I have been considering emigrating and working in Aus as it says on their official web site that there is great demand for plasterers!
I have been out of the trade for 19 years so out of practise and plan is for approx. 4-5 years time so will have to go to refresher course somewhere in sussex, any recommendations?
Also from what i've read the Aussies use different methods and gear to us in uk anybody know what?
Like non-site work so apart from the 'outback' :) anybody got suggestions to areas to try for away from big towns in Aus?

cheers for now

Arthur

There is a member called Griff he is already in OZ.

I am off travelling for a year around the world and we will be spending 6 months in OZ I personally have no intentions is settling back in the UK.

Arthur do you have any quals? There are parts of oz that need less points ie victoria, ive just filled out my TRA (trade recognition Australia)form and am about to send off just waitin on a few more refs. They have only this month put up a crisis list and solid plastering is on it ;D

arthur it depends on a few things, age quals, health and criminal record. Solid plastering is a 60 point job, thats the most points you get for any job. There is a list called the MODL list and this is a demand list solid plastering is on it, this gives you an extra 20 points if you have a job to go to and 15 if you havent. There is different paths to get in, a, b, c, d, and e. Pathway d has been removed this is what my mate qualified with a year and a half ago, he had nvq 2 as a fixer. If he was to apply now he wouldnt get in. You will have to prove you have been a plasterer for 2 years from qualifying at level 3 or advanced craft or six years with level 2 but dont quote me on this bit. There are ways in but without your indentures and proof of a full apprenticeship you wont get a skilled visa which gives you residency straight away. There are places doing an assesment for an AQ? an australian qualification but it cost around 2000 pound.

Flynnyman is right. I came over here and took the chance of not having been here before just do it. There's a company in Gloucestershire who charge 3grand but I wouldbn't touchem with a barge pole. They are getting a real bad name over here by the poor quality of qualifications. It's just to make money from the Brits by the OZ'ss.

Flynnyman where did you get your NVQ City and Guilds. You are right about the points but they do make prizes. I had a very good agent, and as for 2-3yrs plastering, there are many people out here who haven't got that experience but still got here by hgaving someone in the know.

alright griff nice to see you back, i have c&g 1, 11, and advanced craft also skills tested and have my indentures so am quite lucky on the imigration point. They have changed it in the last 18 months and a lot of people are finding it difficult if not impossible with the skills and quals they have. Where are you in oz? i have just filled in my tra form and should be sending it off in a few weeks with more refs im hoping to send around 10 refs just to be sure. I am not using an agent i cant afford to waste money but from what ive heard getting your skills recognised is the hardest part. where are you from in england? did you go on your own or with family? how long have you been in oz? what type of rendering are you doing and i heard skimming is coming in slowly in some parts of oz have you heard anything? what advise would you give anyone applying and wish you would have known and done before you arrived, cheers mate.

I have been thinking about a possible move down under, I am a time served plasterer without c&g but have advanced craft card . What are the chances for me without c&g. thanks

whats an advanced craft card?

you cant just have the quals on their own you have to of been doing the job aswell, you might of learnt 20 years ago like me, but not been doing it for the last 15 so they want proof you have been doing it post qualification.

Its not an advanced craft card it is a gold skilled card have a look Link Removed they dont give you advanced or nvq 3 quals but you need them to get one or look at the other route. If your looking to apply for oz under a skills visa you will need to have the quals, wether the card is recognised in oz is another thing but it doesnt prove you have the quals, they will list your quals on the back but you need them to get one.
