I'm new and in need of advice from experts on the render on my house, which is currently in a poor state of repair.
It appears as though the current top coat has been applied on to the existing render, which may be original from the 1930s. This top coat is now flaking off in large amounts. The bits that can be seen underneath indicate that no real prep work was done to the existing surface prior to installation which is why it has failed.
I contacted a specialist company through a government scheme and they recently came to look at the property. The chap that turned up ran a hammer across the walls, tapping when he detected a change in sound. His view was that the render was largely sound, but would require some patch repair, with the top coat needing to be removed and replaced. I had previously been told that render shouldn't be patch repaired, is this true?
He then advised that they could strip, prep and install a product called Andura for about £5k. I can't find any information about this product that is positive and it sounds like it is essentially a paint. Has anyone used it or encountered it before?
The house itself is not particularly big (3 bed semi) and they didn't think they would need scaffold because of the shape (I will try and get photos later but it is chalet style). My initial thoughts were that £5k was a bit expensive for repainting a house (albeit with some extra prep work). For a comparison I was quoted £3.2k earlier in the year to re-do in a 'standard' render although the guy that quoted this was then too busy to do it.
I am a bit uncertain about whether the render does need to come off (as I was told by a general builder who didn't want the job) or if it does just need the top coat removed and replaced (which could just be a tactic to push this particular top coat product).
