    Removed my floor tiles

You can get a primer which is designed for self levelling compound, and it's suitable for use over bitumen floors, I've used it a few times and it works perfectly. Wickes have just started stocking it, it's in a 2.5 litre tub, and is a pea-green colour.

    Plaster problem

Yeah I've had bags of skim that were still warm, I assumed this was because they were very fresh from being manufactured. I suppose a pallet full of bags is gonna take quite a while to cool down. Had no problems using them though, wouldn't have known any different from any other mix.

Yeah, the WP1 generally comes as a kit, containing a primer which allows you to go over pretty much any sound substrate.

    Wetroom renovation

Yeah I'd just go over the existing membrane if its stuck down that well. You'll probably need to chisel out some of the floor to release the waste fitting, quite often the connection from waste fitting to waste pipe is solvent welded so you might need to replace a section of pipe as well...

    Wetroom renovation

I subcontract to a company doing wetroom conversions for local authorities, and I reckon what you have proposed will be fine, just make sure that the mosaics you use are non-slip or you may end up being sued if someone slips on their arse ! The only thing you may need to check is the waste...

    Coloured plaster

They did it on that Grand Designs tv show, it doesn't give a uniform colour, but still looked ok. Might be worth experimenting with some mortar pigment and doing a few sample boards?

    Van Insurance....

Budget Insurance have been cheapest for me for the past 3 or 4 years. I still use all the price comparison sites each time its due though, just to make sure. I'm paying approx £300 fully comp for a 2006 Toyota Hiace Can't help with your NCD question though

    suction control

Yeah it goes a lot further than bonding agents or PVA as its really thin and watery. A 5 litre tub did me about 4 or 5 rooms, just make sure you brush off as much loose powdery crap as you can before you paint it on

    foam

It only disintegrates if it is exposed to UV light, so as long as its covered up and protected from sunlight then it doesn't lose its strength. Agree that it is no substitute for proper frame fixings on doors/windows though!

Well, he did come pick me up this morning, but in a Land Rover not a tractor. Was looking forward to it too The Land Rover was impressive though, it was sailing through snow drifts without any bother

Who cant get to work in the snow?

I walked to my job today, couldn't get the van out. About a mile and a half, up a very steep hill, in 3 foot snowdrifts, with a rucksack full of tools on my back. I was fooked before I'd even started! Back there tomorrow, but need some more materials to finish the job off. It's at a...

    Slow setting bonding

Yeah I've found its been a bit inconsistent recently. Friday last week I was on a small job (1 wall only) which needed a tight coat of bonding then skim, and sat looking at it for 3 hours waiting for it to set. Today I've filled in some chases before overskimming, and the bonding had set in...

    Contracts - written or verbal?

Just had a £5k+ quote accepted by a large company who do refurbishment work for a local authority. So far I've sent them my detailed quote in writing, and they have accepted via email. Before I actually start the job I wanted to get something in writing regarding payment terms, etc, etc...

    Chemical Reaction ????

Did it look ok when you'd just skimmed it? I've seen a wall that looked like that after it was painted. Turns out they'd not given it a mist coat and just slapped thick emulsion on it. The paint then peeled away in places, so they layered some more on, and it left the wall looking exactly the...

    hmmm

A mate of mine does sand-blasting for a living, 75% of his work is small stuff like cleaning up beams and fire surrounds, but he does occasionally strip full houses. As a rough guide, an average sized 3/4 bed detached house takes him about 2 days, and he charges about a grand. He's a few...

    Skimming onto dryed PVA

Did a small set this afternoon, onto a couple of small walls that had a coat of PVA that had dried. Now, I know that most of us on here would agree that 'best practice' is to skim onto PVA whilst tacky, and not dry. And I also know that most of us on here will agree that PVA is used to...

    Price of a new bucket.

A useful tip for anyone using one of these big buckets from Wickes: Don't drag it across a room using just one handle when it's full to the top with a mix. I did, and the handle snapped clean off in my hand, and I went flying backwards into a wall :-\

Hardwall at £1 per bag in East Manchester area

There's a load more Hardwall reduced at my local Wickes. It's £3.50 a bag, and they've got a pallet and a half full. They'll probably drop it to a £1 a bag again in a week or so if it's not all been sold. Might be of interest to someone?

    tanking membrane

Just done a job with the mesh membrane this week, got to board and skim it next week. It's good stuff, dead easy to use and there's good money in it too. Got about 25m2 left over plus approx 350 fixing plugs if anyone wants to buy any? There's loads of different brands of it out there, but...

Yeah a mate of mine who is a mechanic has got an iphone and it's still in perfect condition with no scratches, so the screens must be pretty tough. Couple of overboarding snags.

I reckon foam is just as strong as gripfill if used correctly. Try sticking 2 offcuts of board together - squirt some foam on one piece, give it 30 seconds to expand, and then squash the two pieces of board together to squeeze the air bubbles out of the foam. Give it 20 minutes and there's no...

    building work

    Radiator Removals

Here's an example of what can go wrong if you choose to remove a radiator (this is what happened to me today) First problem was one of the lockshield valves had corroded and would not close properly, so I had to drain down the entire heating system - this took about 2 hours as there was no...

Not bad for a first attempt ??

Nip back with a 4 inch grinder and some lengths of roofing batten. Screw the batten to the bottom of the wall, about 4 inches from the floor. Run your grinder along the top edge to cut through the render (use the guard as a depth stop so you don't cut into the brickwork) then remove the screws...
