What internal plaster for solid brick walls

Hi guys,

I’m renovating a solid brick property built by my great great grandfather, I’ve had the external walls rendered in lime, and I did plan on doing the internal walls in lime but I’m getting cold feet.

Basically I’m very worried about the possible finish I can get from the lime. I like the straight square flat look of modern gypsum plaster and I’m not sure I can get that with lime?!

I have thought about battening out the external walls and fitting insulation board to provide a small cavity just in case? Then sand and cementing the rest.
Also thought about sand and cement everything but then I’m worried about the lime on the outside wicking through slightly and messing the plaster up, but due to my inexperience I have no idea if this will affect it or not?

Can anyone give me an idea of what I could expect with the options I’ve listed or even give me better options given that I have lime render on the outside?

So many conflicting advice online, lime lovers want to spit on s&c and some just say tank everything lol I just don’t know what to do

Lime was on there originally. And no render.

It has been botched over the years with pebble dash render, built up bodged concrete outside yard which bridged the bitumin dpc and patches of hacked off internal plaster replaced with the hardest cement scratch coat known to man and most of the internal skimmed over with modern plaster. I’m back to brick now though

Have a look into bauwer light, @Bauwer

I will give them a call, surprisingly there doesn’t seem to be many lime specialists around my area and none that anyone I know can recommend which does worry me, as it’s hard to find a good referral like with most other trades.

Quite a few around the west wales area and over the border

You can try @PFTwales he's in Swansea if he can't do it I'm sure he knows someone closer to you

Have you done that with brick with lime mortar or brick with lime render?
Not sure tbh mate, for realistically, it's all off and all time we get there, and we just follow our orders. Lime plaster hasn't came up to often so it's not something I know a lot about tbh. Only seen it couple times.

Oh well, they will call me then :D

Problem is the price when you tell the customer it’s like dropping a bomb, but the labour is nowhere near than any other render. If you mix yourself- time consuming, if you buy ready- expensive and then is applying the render and knowing what you are doing , otherwise can turn into disaster. On the other hand is render like no other.

This is also worrying me lol, for obvious reasons but I know it’s going to be pricey!

It’s also why I’ve asked on here as there must be other options that will work fine other than lime?

Lime seems such a forgotten mystery!

I never got into this lime malarkey here, should read up on it, only used bagged premix "lime" stuff here, back home just used slaked lime

It is , but ..... it will be cheaper than bauwer ;)

It’s all innthe numbers tbh. I have to say bauwer is the better render

Have you done any bawaur internal plastering?

Looks a lot of work for their system, after reading up on it I can imagine the final product ticking all the boxes of done right,

Do you want a quote or you just asking :)

Both really, no idea if you are anywhere near to where I am though?
For Bauwer light it depends how thick do you want it and the state of the walls, so is for lime. Proper quote can be given only by visiting the site and I am London based, but not scared of traveling for the right job.

For bawaur I was thinking of a simple 25mm if I went down that route but again I don’t know if I could go thicker on the external walls and thinner where the insulation isn’t needed as much or if 25mm in the minimum for the base all round?

Quote would be entirely up to you, I can send you a load of photos and measurements if you like, to see if it interests you?
