What happened here

I was skimming a lounge at a house where they had the rendering done 18 months ago and it was like that, interested to know the reason. It seemed sound but almost like crazing

Ya this was done 10 year's ago approx. Inside being plastered out now. The house owner tells me that the previous plasterer said that the sand was to blame.....
