What advice would you give to an absolute beginner?

Hello all,

I'm here seeking some advice and hopefully some inspiration. I have been in dead end warehouse jobs since leaving school nearly 14 years ago. I'm now 30 and married, with 3 young kids to provide for. I'm thinking of taking a big leap and leaving my job to start a college course in plastering 2 and a half days a week. It would take me just over a year to reach Lvl 2 diploma and would be a bit of a financial struggle to be honest. I need to be certain it's for the best before I ditch my stable job and throw my savings at this course. Some tradesmen have said there is too many plasterers and not to bother whereas others say there's always work for a good plasterer. Any advice would be great. I have never done any plastering before, I just think it's something I might enjoy. Sorry if I have banged on a bit. I look forward to your responses. Thanks in advance.

Id forget the course.
What I'd do is use your savings to take 2 days off a week and gain experience with a plasterer onsite.
You'll learn a lot more a lot quicker.
I'd also say to potential companies you'd work for a minimum amount or nothing to get your foot in the door.
Take unpaid leave from your current job or find a part time one to suit.
The course will teach you basics if that but you'll have no onsite real world experience so would be just as useless as anyone else starting out to be honest.
That's my opinion anyway.

Thanks very much for your reply. Much appreciated.

the problem is after you have finished your plastering course and spent your savings. it will take at least 3 years before you will be able to cover your wages. no plasterer will employ you because as a 30 year old person with a family you need a wage to be able to house and feed them.

As said by J Green plastering. I served a full apprenticeship and learnt more in six months working with a team of price work plasterers than I did going to college, not saying apprenticeships aren't ok just my opinion

I'm only messing mi ol mucker you do what you feels the right move for you and don't let anybody stand in your way !!! If your attitude is right ? Then you will go far :birra:

Do what you need to do... nothing beats working with a plasterer to gain experience...

I've heard there's good money in being a fluffer for G** porn....you could give that a go if you want a change in direction from plastering(y)

I'd did something very similar to yourself was doing agency labouring jobs no prospects so went to collage did the level 2 diploma. I managed to meet a plasterer through this forum and have not looked back since. I don't know if I'm just an exception but after nearly two year I think I cover my money. If it's what you want to do go for it but I was in the right place at the right time to end up where I am now. You will learn more with a plasterer doing the job every day but collage give you a good bace knolage as long as your tutor is good.

I turned 30 a few months ago....it felt a bit wierd to be officially not young anymore...i still feel and act like im about 15

I didn't want to say anything about Loden yet as it's still early days but totally agree with what you just said.He has been out on work experience with me for last 2 weeks but reading your post and thinking of just these two weeks I got to say he is similar to what you have described ,he has knowledge for sure and has surprised me on that side of work..he knows from taking everyone's advise on board off the forum that it's the doing work with plasterer that he needs ,I don't know how things will work out with both of us in future but I think if someone has that plaster factor in them it will be made to work somehow ..
Getting the experience with a spread is always going to be the hard bit if someone is older and have commitments, however if that can be made to work it has to just be done if not it's like others have said you might as well not bother trying to get into plastering because it is a doing job (with a little bit of knowledge lol)

Older than I look. I'm 29 for the third time today

:eek:no fcuking way Peter Pan.

I keep having to fill out young persons risk assesments for you
I thought when you needed the day off for parents evening it was to discuss your attendance record (y)

I play on it when the kids are in bed they went to bed at 5pm today

That's biggest thing the money issue..how many years can a man with a family or bills and commitments etc survive on low wages..lets be honest the money is s**t for a fair few years then that's not guaranteed after that all depending on the person..then your on knackered shelf wen u actually do become competent and earning if u start late

If your hard working, dedicated and someone who gives a toss about the work you're doing/leaving. You'll be fine.

Its not plain sailing at first. Nothing is?
