I know alot of you use ocr but in ireland its not so popular yet , however im looking to try it and wondering what are the methods to get best finish, ie, featheredge it and float sponge or is it best to let it go an i bar and float sponge any advice is welcomed thanks

Treat it like sand and cement. Rule, float, sponge. If you let it go to i bar stage it's gone too far for a sponge.

Cool mate thanks, is it sticky to lay on by hand.? Im gona be spraying soon when i get a machine so i want to try the bagged renders before i buy. How doesit sponge up is it a fine sand or is it gritty?

It depends on who's ocr you use?

Parex and Weber are fine aggregares but Kilsaren is very gritty.

Thanks guys, i am looking at weber , i used kilsaran and found it way to gritty for a sponge finish and was quite sticky . Hoping the ocr is what im looking for but in ireland its hard to steer builders away from site mix as they hear the price of bagged render they say no. How do you guys find it with builders in the uk the same or ?

All my jobs are on price so as long as the job is finished to a good standard I don't think they care what sand & cement I use
I do like OCR mind as it can be finished in 2 passes in a day

So bobby went and collected some ocr today €8 per bag pricey, rep said be careful what machine i use as some machines dont mix it proper, im hopin to get ritmo how does it spray through that? And how do u find with the price of ocr getting the jobs do u lower labour to accomodate or are builders ok with the price of it

with putting it through.never had a issue using it through ritmo
Obviously your machine needs to be able to mix & pump renders yes
Naturally labour costs will come down although it's beneficial due to the same day completion
I'll be looking at using 40-70 bags(m2) per day depending on job so so good area can be covered for sure

I take it you are doing this by hand? If so then you have the benefit of two coats the same day. So although you are paying more for the render you will save on labour.

If you are using a machine then you will get a lot more on so labour saving but you need to make more euro's to cover your capital cost on the machine.

Builders here up to 07ish had the same attitude to material costs. But now plasterers are coming into the rendering market so long as it is pre bagged stuff. Getting someone to mix in a Belle Mixer and carry it up in a bucket is getting hatd to find now.

You will get good results with ocr and over time it will catch on. Keep pushing it.

@bobby do you charge the same price for ocr as you do for sand cement as a labour element?
Most of the jobs I price/tender for is supply & fit and as most will find are not the only 1 pricing.
I have sneaked my cost up a little to allow for OCR on private jobs so it evens itself up against the traditional way of having a extra bloke carrying buckets up ladders
It makes life bloody easier also.
I take a back seat a just staff off while my blokes spray and use the power sponge

@bobby, Sorry bud I worded that wrong, would the labour element of your price still be the same as the s&c or would you reduce that as being a quicker turnaround?

Im applying by hand for now till i get ritmo.in new year. Have to say it is quality gear to use it sponged up beautiful and builder could see the difference which is a plus. The pricing thing ill have to look at and try lower my labour rate slightly but still make more money than the traditional methods.

Why lower your labour rates, your still doing the same amount of work in theory.

To me these products are too make money.
Think about it.
We make money faster and the client saves time which to builders is a saving.

surley if your dropping your labour price just because you spray your giving the benefit of the purchase of the machine to the customer/builder rather than recovering the money spent on the machine yourself?....or am I missing something?

That micro cracking is down to getting on it too early with a power sponge imo.
I disagree
Did a job in the summer (400 bags)and half the job got the sun and had micro cracks and the other half it was over cast and got no sun and didn't have 1 crack at all
It's srinks in the sun and cracks

I know it should be same labour rate and material on top but my issue is over here its a new concept bagged render and tryin to explain to a builder a product is gona be double they runa mile . So my theory was if it was lowering my rate slightly to accomodate the material as its so much nicer than site mix. Its annoying how backward builders can be
