When its ready mate. There is no deffinitive answer really its ready when its ready. But as a guide i did a 4x5 m ceiling other day on my own by the time i had flattened it washed my kit cleaned the bucket out washed the edges changed my wash water, and refilled buckets ready for next mix it was ready to trowel. But on another day another ceiling it could of set or could still be soaking wet many factors to consider such as background suction control room temparature etc etc.
Expereince only will tell you when pal.
Also depends on how neat you lay it on, I can lay both coats on very neat and even when skimming so flattening is very easy but other spreads I have worked with in teh past it takes longer to flatten in than it does to get the gear on the wall
It comes with experience... they cant teach you that anywhere, no college or course will just slapping miles of walls on over the years
As a customer of mine pointed out last week as i was doing their ceiling. Plastering is a skill and a knack for knowing when to trowel. It only comes with experience as Danny says! :RpS_wink:
