Hi I’m in the army at the minute and getting out next year. I can do level 2 NVQ plastering course with my re settlement from the army. It’s something I’ve always been intrested in doing as a career. But I know a lot of plasterers don’t have labourers any more. Is there much work out there for a newly trained but no experience plasterer?

Get your nvq done getting your qualifications is a must and try jump on with a plastering firm loads of busy spreads will always need labourer! Try get in with someone that does lots of rendering will vastly improve your skills with the trowel! That’s when you finished mixing cleaning ect if ya lucky enough he might let ya do a reveal (y)

What is your army career story?
If you’ve been well adjusted by the forces then jump on board and welcome..
If your flirting around ptsd then trade work will send you over the edge. I’m off full respect for those lads that go down that ptsd way - don’t get me wrong - but I’m just saying

Been in the infantry for just over 7 years, I’ve had a good career just feel I’ve done my time now and want to get out and start a new career and plastering is something that’s always appealed to me. Just want to try secure a stable job for when I’m out, where’s best to find work, is it smaller local firms or big company’s?

Genuinley if your looking for s secure stable job then dont look at plastering.

You will not get a job paye you will be self employed.

Thanks for the replies. The Construction industry is the only place I can see my self working when I’m out. With my re settlement money The only courses that intrest me is bricklaying or plastering. On my leave il try get some work experience in and go from there.

What the army offers in terms of resettlement budget isn't going to deliver what you need, buddy.

You're simply not going to have the experience you need to get any sort of well paid work and you'll have way too much on your plate learning to be a civvi to even think about going self employed.

You need an outfit that will provide the training that the grant provides and then go on to be an employer that's sympathetic to the standard of training that's been provided.

I know a couple of people who took this up, seeing as you mention bricklaying. I don't think they do plastering.

Your unit resettlement officer (who usually knows f**k about all but that doesn't stop him advising) should have mentioned these people to you, but just in case he hasn't... The lads I know who did it were pretty happy with what they got and seemed to get into reasonably well paid work quite quickly.

Crucially, the employer knows exactly what standard you'll be at because they provided the training and so can provide continued support.

Don’t bother mate shocking trade to get into, trying plumbing or sparks much easier and loads of money

Be very very careful with these training suppliers. Remember that they are out primarily to get the money off the army and the people who sanction the payments of have little clue what they are paying for - meaning that the scope for piss taking is huge.

My understanding of the fast track nvq courses is that they're for experienced plasterers to get accredited, definitely not for noobs to cram an apprenticeship into a fortnight long course, which I'm guessing would be about right for the sort of money that the resettlement package is worth.

Alot of times, they take some of the money for accommodation which appears to be great until you consider the impact that that has on the actual training that they are able to deliver.

Search 'f**k**g coursing T***s' on here to find out what these guys think of short courses

I wish I.d been a chef or photographer . Of even a mechanic or hairdresser. Women pay a fuckkng fortune for their hair doing

Dont get into plastering-I repeat DONT GET INTO PLASTERING..I'd only advise young lads who are fresh out of school to get into this game as a last resort I.e there as thick as pig s**t..honestly do something else like locksmith or tiling etc..or become a porn star

I would advise against going into plastering...get yourself a professional qualification.

Seriously, if you choose to come into this trade at your stage of life and in your circumstances, you're just proving that you're as thick as shite.
You should have saved some money over the seven years, stop thinking of training having to be free. Use some of your money to take a basic plumbing course, way, way better option.
