im down devon at the mo on HOLs satyin in a friend house..they have had the place skimed...
its shockin looks like a new boy was left to do the job!
holes ,lines in the walls brush marks round sockets plaster all up windows and when it get 2 a tight area they just left it out..but dint even fade the plaster in at all!
it reali is bad on curved corners it just brushed round sorta looks crap!

im ganna re do the job

there are some people out there who think that will do and they charged more than £120 a day iv hurd!

that is bad you should get them back to sort it!! there is some old guy around my area whos work i have seen a few times and it is really bad and the same firms keep using him ,i told them it is crap but thet keep using him ... :o :oits shocking !!!
how do they keep getting wrk.

I have worked for firms that use crap spreads, it seems that sometimes friendship is worth more than the quality of work :-?

builder mate of mine has a guy he uses regularly for plastering.
He phoned me the other day and said he's refurbing a house and can I do a couple of rooms for him. Said his regular guy is gonna do kitchen but he wants the lounge and dining room done properly!

The mind boggles

A few months ago in a moment of madness I was asked to skim over a mates hall, stairs and landing, about 50m2 of lovely pointy artex (the type that f$*king hurts when you catch youself on it). Said I,d do it for £200. Its a council house and he was swapping with his mother and one of the conditions was that the razortex was skimmed over.
They swapped before I got to do it, said I,d honour the job and still do it for the £200. Mates Mum said she could get it done CHEAPER; £150 the guy said he was a little rusty, must have mis-heard him, cos the skimming,s a bit rustic, the just buttered effect if you ask me. Could have done a better job if I,d laid on with mi arse.
Will defo need re-doing, wont be touching it for £200 now though. ;D

Hello Mate
I think alot of the time its not down to the spreads but the guys in charge, I was doing some work in a beautiful house some time ago, anyway it was quite obvious that it had been plastered with 1 coat and the whole house was the same so Im sure the spreads were told to do this, guess it was for speed etc. the house was afew years old which is when they could not build them quick enough as they were being sold even before they were finished.

i plaster witha passion...if i was asked 2 do a crap job id say no...some people make me mad when they say they can get it done cheaper...artex is 2x the work i reckon ..loads more PVA 3 coats of skim...so day rate £200 min 4 artex celing..and only doing 2 bigs aday at the most

Yep, thats why am a bit relieved, turning out good work is more important than the amount charged. Just one poor job and ruin your reputation. Got some re-work on Thursday tidying up after someones poor standards.
Am on artex tommorow btw. :-X

i work on my own doing domestics mainly, but two weeks ago a friend phoned ti see if i could help out on a refurb site job and i turned up and the work that had been done was real pony i have never seen work like it i dont get how bad spreads keep getting work

its cos theyre too bloody cheap!!
put it this way, if someone goes all out to nail me to the floor on a price i dont exactly give it my full attention, it goes on the wall, gets trowelled up and if they aint happy they can f'kin well sand it...
if i get my askin price, and the customer 'helps me to help them' shall we say, then they get the best of the best, i'll even throw extras in for nothing..
i dont subscribe to the 'ive never paid full price for anything' attitude and i reckon people who expect discounts just cos they got the cheek to ask are gonna get exactly what they pay for...genuine reasons excepted...

btw 'wrong attitude' may spring to some peoples mind here, but im sick of pulling my guts out for people who wouldnt appreciate a free lunch, never mind a spanking job borne of hard work and attention to detail...i can spot the type a mile off and adjust my attitude accordingly (although they dont know it)..
people who think too much of themselves are only interested in one thing...them...ive pandered to em before only to end up feeling used, underpaid and overworked...and its been my own fault!!! no more!!! no more!! no mooore!!!

hear hear old bean! now calm yourself, have a cuppa and think happy thoughts!

i know, sorry lads, just that if i was forced to compete in a price war id go and find something else...i think i can safely say ive done my time sweatin my nuts off for someone elses profit margins...
now wheres that bar of chocolate??

I think price dictates the finnish on site, spread i spoke to on fri was only getting £180 to board & scim a kitchen, and £120 for a bathroom, tennanted houses so all dustsheated,
i asked how he made it pay ,he showed me,god it was rough an hes a good spread, seen him do some good stuff over the years, but like he says got to pay the mortgadge!
