Serated edge and spatular use

Hi fellas, I've always done the traditional sand cement render method/mixing, however been using newer products like Fassa Ms20 and its decent stuff. I just want to know the process I'm seeing with the serrated edge and going over with a spat? Is it really that beneficial? And why use a spat instead the trowel? Always looking at alternative methods to get a wall as flat as possible, many thanks

If you're using it as a s&c alternative smooth finish to be painted, rule or I bar, float & sponge, no need for a
spat or trowel,
saying that a lot of modern plasterers can only use a trowel, skimmers!
