scratch coat

evening all. question. why are some scratch coats (external render) keyed by a scratching comb and other times i've seen the scratch coat done with a devil float? any reason for the two different methods? is anyone of them better... :-?

ive heard of hp12 being rubbed up with a float, i like the wavy scratch though especially in the summer to keep some moisture in the backing coat

Some people devil float when doing rough cast or tyrolean but it you have to apply it alot heavier.
