if i go up keyline, they've got either building sand or sharp sand, which one do i use

also i used plastering sand 2 day, which i bought from wickes and had trouble with it when i was laying on near the beads.

basicly i havn't got a fecking clue about sand. ;D

most of the bigger builders merchants do plastering sand, its sharper than building sand and softer than sharp sand, its varies an awful lot though, luck of the draw if what you gets any good.

where are you? down here (hampshire) jewson, keyline, build base, wickes and travis all do it. must just be lucky

varies everywhere mate, experience will tell u if its good sand..
some builders merchants will send out a real soft sand as 'building sand' wheras others will be slightly coarser, 'sharp' is coarser still and next up from that comes 'ballast' (for concreting)
its the size of the grain which makes it soft or sharp...the softest is 'silver' sand used to fill in block paving...
'washed plastering sand' is generally a medium grain sand sort of halfway between silver and sharp with all the clay rinsed out of it...the clay is just an impurity....
the less shite mixed in with the sand the better the quality...
depends on how much you got to do, any more than about 20-30 metres your prolly better off ringing the local aggregate supplier and gettin a 4 ton minimum drop, itll be ok...if not, assuming the builders merchants 'building' sand aint too soft use that...
i tend to check the sand first, then if need be ill mix it up with some sharp for the scratch coat...if find sharp gives up its water easier and sticks better, but it goes off sharpish too..thats why i only use it in the scratch...

ill have to have another look when im in wickes, i bought that plastering sand i thought it was the right stuff. cheers boys

Very good in depth answer mate. Leighton buzzard is still the best in herts if you can get it. Maybe called something else in other parts of the country and i am not too sure sure of the actual composite of it. Much the texture of of 3 parts sharp and 1 soft.

this discussion always makes me laff...people go 'buzzard sand' 'holme sand' 'norfolk sand' etc etc...but its only where the pit is... i dont know of a company that will ship sand from a particular pit 3/4 the way across the country cos its slightly better than the local sand, it just wouldnt be cost effective..unless your names 'charles, duke of cornwall'(or whatever he's duke of)..i'd say the best people to ask would be closest to you, same county should be ok...

Just on an average basis assuming that thers no hollows to dub out & the block or brickwork is flat, What is the genral meterage a 1 tonne of plastering sand will cover (scratch & top coat) at a 5 to 1 ratio ?

thats it exactly...i like to think 'if the brickies love it, its shite for plastering' :D

i usually work at 0.6 cubic metres to a 'ton bag' (which isnt a ton :-?)
or nearer 0.75 cube to a proper ton...or tonne...  :-/
forget the cement for quantity...

btw i always allow a good bit for wastage on big jobs, its not to bad throwin it back in the mixer when inside and you can scrape it up again clean, but outside, whatever you drop want to be skipped or youll end up with big lumps of whatever the ground is made of in your float coat...bit like tryin to finish plaster with ballast ::)

i assume approx 20m2 to a ton bag when pricing

Back up to key line in the morning mate and stick you hand in a bag of building sand rub it between your fingers, real small uniform grains,do the same with sharp and plastering sands, should be a lot rougher or sharper, hence, sharp sand, and many sized grains, rougher the sand stronger the bond, the washed bit comes well from washing to get the s££t,red sands red cause of all the clay in it or used to be.
what you looking is something with a bit of bite, thats nice and clean ,dirty sands a no no esspecialy the cheap lime sands that arrive on site in a skip, they make grown men cry!

depends how thick you wanna throw it on...some old damp jobs can be up to 30-40mm thick in places if you gotta match up to something...
brand new concrete block wall, dead straight, 6-8mm scratch, same again for float coat
so.... 0.75 cube @ 15mm gives you about 50 square, less how messy you are...and i must admit, i can be a messy f'cker, specially in tight areas...

i'm a messy b*****d i used 9 bags of hardwall today and carried two back out in waste ;D....need to ask the boss for a couple more bags now to finish the job .... oops :-[

good question...thing is what you want to aim for is 'somewhere near' 15mm but plumb up and dead straight if you can...trying to get all 3 dead on will have you in the pub for dinner..
couple of bits of plasterboard and a straight edge on the wall will get you somewhere near, set one end and use the level/straight edge for the rest...
if the walls a bit wibbly wobbly pick your point to nail it and work from that...
that said...ill bet everyones got there own favourite method for fixing beads...

when im skimming i have days when i just look at the set size, windows, hollows, beads the lot and put bang on the right amount of water in so im just scraping the very last bit out the bucket to finish layin on...
then i have other days when ive thrown out best part of half a bag a set cos i aint prepped anything else...worse thing is gettin rid of it after cos if your in a customers house you gotta take it home with u...bags you can burn, f'cking great lumps of set skim have to go down the tip disguised as 'general household waste' in a double black bin liner wanting to split like an aldi carrier bag.. :-[

they prolly told the last plasterer to pour the washout down the bog..thats why you couldnt use it!! ;D

in all fairness i was plastering there bathroom ;D and all the units were out but fook me you should of seen the house it was like the film seven where the bloke dies of gluttoney, i couldn't get over the computer thing though they were sh*t hot though if youve ever played online games these troopers must be up there ...............cheltenham full of posh fit birds and weirdos ;D

i seen a lot like that doin windows for councils...one place you could smell the flat from 2 stories down, my mate gets a tin of air freshener and an elastic band...wraps it over the spray head, knocks on the door...
when he answered it got f'cked down the blokes hallway and my mate goes 'back in 20 minutes' and pulled the door out of his hand..
another time the bloke had blocked his bog so started usin the bath..we had to SHOVEL a load of crap away from the door combination...all the bloke had was an armchair, a vhs video and a HUGE stack of porn movies...and a path from the front door to the armchair to the bathroom to the kitchen through mounds and mounds of crap...you just couldnt make it up..

;D ;D ;D.............deffinately defines wan*ing into youre own sh*t
