Sand and cement in the cold !

Took on a job for family knowing damn well it's too cold really!

Friday I had the back of the 2 storey extension on and ruled off by 10am. It didn't rub up until 11pm under lights (FML)

I've been chucking a bit of rapid set in and lots of hydrated lime. Is there another trick I'm missing to get the b*****d stuff to set quicker ?!

All advice welcome !

What accelerater did you use. We use wickes, which I've found to be one of the best. We used a different make the other day, didn't do a thing. After reading the label found out it needed double the amount as others. So it's worth reading the label. Wickes is reliable

Mate it was the f**k**g worst !! Temp dropped and wind howled in. Was a nightmare !

So no waterproofer in the topcoat ? I thought about getting an industrial heater on it but worried it could shrink ?

Put it on as flat as and as late as then finish first light next morning.

Ok if there is no heating on in the building.

I always thought the accelerator worked on the cement content of the mix.
If I am right, then a slight increase in cement will speed up the set. Suction will obviously also be of help, so a good well set scratch coat will be beneficial. I have often found that liquid accelerators need accurate measures to be useful, my usual "chuck it in" approach has not really helped on occasions.
If it has to be a weak mix go with @Rigsby.....late, then early next day.

It's the humidity this time of the year.Silicone top coat can hang on for good 3 days now. Planing is the most important part for external renders in the winter. Always check the forecast for a week ahead .

Top coat was 10:1:1:2 (sand/cement/rapid/lime)

Scratch was done a few days before

to weak of mix to ever set 10 / 1. we use about 5/1.
if you need some more suction put lime in scratch coat leave to cure before you top coat. cut down on the feb mix it will be slower to lay on but will finish off quicker.
you had it on by 10am you should have been on the way home by 2 pm.

Hes also got a 1 of rapid cement to.

I think the lime would slow it. Wix Accel wont do jack to the lime either.

I don't think I'd still be in business if I rendered houses with 10:1 mixes bud .. it's a 5:1:1 mix but half the cement content is rapid set.

after the national disaster with lightning cement, i have never bothered with rapid cement.
