Hi all- I'm renovating a house, built in 1964, and have discovered that instead of gypsum drywall, which is common here, we have a plaster lathe system, with metal lathe covered by a brown coat of rough, sandlike plaster. I was all set to put basic drywall compound on the walls as a finish coat, and to blend in the bare patches, but I am not sure that I can use this. I'm obviously brand new to any kind of plastering, my experience being only with gypsum drywall covered by a simple skim coat of drywall compound. I've removed all of the loose paint and plaster - what do I put over this brown coat? I've included pictures, which show the walls ready for a final coat. Thanks!!!

Cant see the pictures , but if the plaster work is all sound i would get it a coat of a water based stabilising solution followed by a coat of bonding agent and then skim .

ok i've just read your post about being in america, ignore everything i said and ask someone local haha. i don't know if they do skimming type plaster in the usa?

Hi- well, we do have a plaster product called diamond veneer plaster- sold at home depot or lowe's hardware store- do you think that would work? Can you tell me- what is a stabilising solution and bonding agent? what are the brand names? I'll go try to find them in the store. Thanks- oh, and can you see the pictures? I'm not sure if I uploaded them correctly.

Ok mate , sorry cant see pictures, But obviously your a sceptic tank so the best option for you would be to fix dry-wall over the lath and plaster and fill with your compound

Get a local experianced spread to look at it mate he will know what the back ground is and how best to finish it.
Whereabouts in the States are you?

Is this the plaster you mentioned? Link Removed

If so, you may be able to use it to patch up the damage shown in your pictures. The datasheet mentions a bonding agent so you might be able to pick some up at the same place you get your plaster from.

There are a couple of lads from Canada who occasionally visit this forum, they might be able to give you some advice on what are the best products available to you over in the US, as they probably use the same gear in Canada?

diamond finish is good used it many times the thing is in usa they have a sanded finish skim aswell but rarely done now but your house might be done in this, i would if it is a sand finish get a plasterer (which can be hard in states depends where you are) and re do the lot with diamond finish smooth tou just need to bonding agent and skim with new skim beads i have a contact of a top quality plasterer if you need one hes in south florida but would travel
