Just want to clarify rendering any wall including garden walls to ground level is not right? Shouldn't there be a gap at the bottom. I've seen lots of people render direct to ground.

I always keep about a 3 inch gap.
 
you wont see many or more likely any garden walls that are not rendered down to ground level,,as for rendering properties it depends on the job
 
But isn't that wrong as the damp will wick up the render and damage the brick on garden walls? I always thought it was god practice to leave a gap.
