Hi there

This is my first post... I have just finished building a wood fired pizza oven and want to waterproof render it. My question is how should I approach it?

The roof is currently vermiculite and cement mixed. It' a bit like cork tecture wise.

Should I place mesh around it, or render directly onto the vermiculite?

The image above was take before I added the layer of vermiculite (about 2" thick). it's the white circular section that I would like a bit of advise on.

Many thanks

Martin

looks to me that you have already put chicken wire on it, also it depends on what heat will come through as the render wil crack its easy to waterproof just add some water proofer to your render mixes do it in 2 or 3 coats allowing each coat to completley cure before covering and use progressivley weaker mixes ie 1st coat 5 x 1 second coat 6 x 1 or you can get a pizza oven render from here Conserv. Lime Mortar Suppliers & Stone Restoration Specialists ask for colin sorry i just forgot the name of it

The chicken wire is now covered by the vermiculite and cement mixture , which has a kind of cork type texture.

Although the oven gets really hot (about 470 degrees). The insulation stops virtually all heat from escaping to the outside.

Looks good mate i would just go for a standard S&C render with waterproofer in it as you say the vermiculate should contain the heat, there is a school of thought that advises against using any kind of mesh where heat is involved as the heat may cause the mesh to expand at a different rate than the render and cause cracking. All the bread ovens i have seen on the continent in rural areas the render is sacrificial and repaired when needed, did you build it of a drawing or make it up as you whent?

try hemp plaster then coat it with primal this will make it waterproof but the hemp can take the heat

LOL........he might need to find someone else to follow, but I think Celtic could be a wee bit down the list :RpS_lol:
