Hi guys I have been plastering for a while now and still building my knowledge but have never tried to plaster after wallpaper has been taken off plasterboard the pb is about 25 - 30 years old.

I have been to a job estimate today ,the customer has stripped his lounge , it is plasterboarded and then it has been painted on 2 walls and then wallpaper of 2 layers and 2 walls just wallpapered on the plasterboard.

He has stripped it all off ,the pb that had paint on then wallpaper on , some paint is left and some parts of the top layer has been taken off but no major damage

The wallpapered pb has taken 50% off the top layer but again no major score marks

Should I use sugar soap to take some of the wallpaper paste that has been left behind on the painted pb ?

Can I use thistle bond or febond it it on all the the plasterboard walls to give me a mechanical key and skim over it , he doesn't mind paying for this if it's better to do this rather than pva

Is there much difference between thistle bond it and febond blue grit it ? ?

I'm a bit nervous as can see the plaster peeling off ??? :RpS_cursing:

thanks for any replies guys

Sugar soap it, get it all clear of paper, then a weak pva, leave to dry and give it a second stronger pva, the grit is In my opinion expensive coloured pva with sand.

Already made this mistake pva-ing old board and not realising there was **** on the surface. Shelled off and I looked like a dick :RpS_crying:

Ended up giving it three paranoid coats and then was fine. Sugar soap would've maybe saved me some bother

What you have to be aware of if the wall was treated with decorators size before it was wall papered, the size has a habit of coming back to life and acti as a plaster retarder, and your first coat of skim will still be soft , and have to set from the front to the back, instead of back to the front, I would make sure all the wall paper is removed , then apply thistle bondit, and a thin coat of skim, allow the coat to really tighten up maybe a hour or so, then apply a second tight coat of skim, and trowel the second coat up.

The bonding agent will seal in & harden any paste left on the wall no need to wash it off on plasterboard, just peel any loose paper or sand the loose bits then apply a bonding agent it's a lot better for this situation than pva it doesn't blister up like it will if you use pva :RpS_thumbup:
Trust me I'm a doctor :-)

:RpS_scared:...................wasnt he dead popular....................:RpS_unsure:

Well thank you its not very often one of the secretary's says well done :)

Well I'm sure it isn't :RpS_thumbup: but I'm not a secretary I'd say more of a cleaner,
not very good with paper work & secretaries are on more money than I am at the moment :RpS_crying:
So it's back to scrubbing the bogs for me :-(

See you in there partner I'll bring your mop n bucket :-)
