Plastering over artex hole!

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and new to plastering. I’m looking to plaster over some artex walls and ceiling. I’m thinking it probably does contain asbestos so obviously want to tread carefully!

My plan was to Pva everything and then apply a couple coats of multi mixed with bonding to cover artex. I’d then do my 2 coats of multi and skim. Please do suggest if this is not the best approach!

However, my main question is that there is a section of ceiling that has a bad crack and a hole in it and I’m not sure how to tackle it. First of all, would this be unsafe as it is assuming it does contain asbestos? Do you think I would get away with just boarding this section or do I need to somehow try and remove the artex here? Am I better seeking help from an asbestos specialist?

That is NOT a diy project. employ a plasterer. don't worry about asbestos the amount in Artex was small.
Your house looks like a Christmas cake needs some money spent on it.

Ok I understand it’s more complex than a standard wall but how would a plasterer tackle something like that?

Artex might be the least of your worries there, that may be a structural rsj that's being covered up and depending on when the work was carried out it could be an old asbestos fire board that was used to protect it. Always best to be on the safe side where these things are concerned.

Thanks for the helpful reply. Who would you suggest I contact to help in this case? Is this something an experienced plasterer could help fix? Or do I need someone else? Would you get the area tested for asbestos first? Cheers

you would be better getting advice from an expert, if it is a steel beam running across there, judging by how old it looks, there's a good chance it has some kind of asbestos fire protection on it. could be mixed into plaster or sprayed on.

Not sure tbh but that’s a good point. Perhaps a structural engineer is needed before anything. Thanks
