Plastering a fire place

hello all

I had a call from a woman wanting me to quote for re plastering her fire place.she is having a wood burner fitted.

she also wants the inside of the fire place plastered to a smooth finish. Boarding with fire board isn't an option as the space is very limited and dabbing boards on would reduce it more. The fire place is brick and it's on an external wall

My question is would you sand and cement two coats and a skim finish or can I hardwall and skim?

Clearly it will effect my quote and it's for a woman who has fell on hard times and really don't want it to crack and blow.

Only fire places I've done so far have been redundant ones.

Thanks in advance

The specialist fire stuff is expensive I would sand and lime it or sand and cement but not hardwall and make sure you key the float coat well

Ah I see. Cost will matter on this job.

I think I will go for the lime sand and cement. 2 coats and skim finish. With hydrated lime.

Only question now is that it will be thicker then Fire board and board adhesive ?

If you skim finish it could crack if not specially heat resistant. Depth depends on how flat the brickwork is but rendering it should be about 15mm and dabs plus board thickness could be about 22mm but all depends on bricks

You should be able to float it straight out if you are going for lime putty and sand but you will have to leave it quite a while to top coat as lime needs the carbon dioxide in the air to go off you also cannot use galvanised beads as the lime will rot them so if you use beads they have to be either stainless or plastic. Make the lime putty yourself with a bag of lime from your builders merchant, technically it’s the wrong sort but it does work and it does go hard, float coat three and one using sharp sand top coat is two of play pit or silver sand put your lime putty in the tub first and add your sand DONT add any water knock it up with your drill and add a tiny bit if you need it but you won’t. You should be ble to get it quite tight.

Walk away you ain’t there to do favours cos no favours will be coming your way if it cracks and comes off

Iv done loads, some I have left bare cement board and fire cement the corners, some hardwall and skim some iv skimmed the cement board. Never used heat resistant plaster and never had 1 crack or blow off. I go back to most of my installs once a year to service the appliance

Makes you laugh...fell on hardtimes!!!

Then next breath having a £1000 burner fitted!!!

You need to smell the coffee fela!!!

@Pagey has it nailed!!!

I’m there to earn a living not do favours for people, had one woman once boasting about how much her taps were in the kitchen how it’s all high spec then in next breath said they was on a tight budget and I was to expensive

A job I did on a budget in the 90s ,they later spent 6k on curtains , felt sorry for a couple once trying to finish a job, then found out she spent £5k on new tits during the work

I had a solicitor tell me I was to expensive to sand Cement a wall and skim said would have to be over 2 visits as would like it to cure before skimming gave him a price he said ok go ahead boiled him in and 3 days later he called me to say he had for the work done by a bloke who said he would do it on the spot even though the leak wasn’t fixed and I advised him to sort that first bloke was cheaper than me also anyway he rang me to say it had gone wrong and could I come and sort I politely declined, what made me laugh was a quick google of his name he was around 275+vat an hour for basic advice yet called me expensive people like that get what they deserve

Always the same pal, I worked in a hair dressers they were charging people 70 quid for half hours work and moaned at my hourly rate lol

Agree with Pagey, everycunts on a tight budget when it comes to paying for wet trades but the tight budget miraculously vanishes when they're choosing a new kitchen, bathroom....or wood burner in this instance.

I stopped feeling sorry for people a long time ago when they bring out their mini violin and play the tight budget melody it's in one ear and out the other.

Sounds like she is going to have major problems with this installation
Stoves require clearances around them to work properly
50mm at the back and 150 mm each side is usually the basic requirement
Manufacturers installation instructions must be followed otherwise you run the risk of the stove cracking up due to it overheating
Vitcas fireproof render and Vitcas fireproof plaster on top are suitable products for getting a flat finish in Fire chambers Use their Pva to prepare the surface
Never use any normal plastering materials in proximity to a stove
Gypsum plasters will breakdown if exposed to temperatures of over 40 c for sustained periods
Pink board is only suitable for up to 47 c and has a combustible paper face
If you use board in a stove chamber then use 12mm Superlux use Vitcas heat proof dabs not Gypsum dabs Superlux is expensive It’s about £160 per sheet !!
However a wood burner and liner installation is at least £2500 so if the client wants a proper trouble free job that’s what it costs to do it properly
Ensure the customer understands that air clearances around the stove are vital
Pushing in the biggest appliance you can get into the hole is not going to work and insurance companies will want a HETAS compliance certification from the stove installer
Vitcas sell small sheets of board similar to Superlux it’s cheaper if you are only doing a one off
Stoves produce massive heat at the sides only use the proper materials or you will asking for trouble
If the client can’t afford it walk away
