Plasterboard adhesive on old brick wall

Stripped a wall back to brick and I would like to plasterboard it due to new water pipes running down it and plenty of new electrical cables.

One plasterer came round and said it’s best to scratch coat with sand and cement then board and another said to sbr the wall to seal in the dust then board it to save the hassle, a friend it work has said to blue grit it then board it and mostly I have read to pva it on the internet.

What’s the best way to do it?

Is it a cavity wall?

If its not, then dabbing PB in isn't the way to go unless its insulated PB. Sand and cement generally best option.

If its,a cavity wall, and you're set on boarding it, then brush off and wet it down a bit with a spray bottle, then dab away.

It’s a long internal wall, old house with lime mortar beween the bricks, we are changing the layout so my brother can live with my mum and she wanted a new radiator and tv point and electrical points along the wall so they come out a fair bit, otherwise I would have sand and cemented it.

With so much conflicting advice I’m worried the plasterboards will fall off! Lol

Would it need to be insulated on an internal wall? I might timber frame it but I don’t really want to loose too much room

No not really but might help with noise transfer . Easy'er to get over all your pipe work and cables so depends how much wiggle room you have . Just one option imo.

Dab a board on , then when the stuff is gone hard drill mushrooms through the slab where the dabs are. Then you’re wall is straight and the slab can’t come off

I have always sealed walls with something prior to dot and dab. I don't think it's maters what you use as it with bind and help adhesive stick. Board adhesive is good stuff and will stick ok if the surface is dust free and clean but sealing will be insurance that it sticks well.jmo. I'd use whatever I had that was kicking around either Pva. Bluegrit or sbr. Probably watered down Pva

Haha I think people will stick with what works for them, I suppose I should have asked if anyone had any failures with the above methods!?

Just brush off looses mortar & dust, wet allow water to soak in so the wall is damp but without surface water, Dab. It will stick like sh**. Trust me. If your concerned do this in one area with a small piece of board, say 5” square and try to Pull it off the following day.

Good plan, I’ll give that a go this week!

The problems come if you move or tap board as adhesive starts to set. It breaks the adhesion. Sealing gives a little more time to adjust and stops the breaking away from adhesive shrinking. I think if you are doing job on a price then skip the sealer as time and cost is to great. For your own work belt and braces and seal

Remember if you put a thin coat of pva on first that that thin layer of glue is between the adhesive & brick. Not necessary and could compromise the spec in my opinion, fine for skim bonding but not the weight of adhesive, board, skim etc but prob just me being anal. But deffo don’t want to disturb whilst setting.
