plaster board on ceiling from 1950

I am placing ceiling tile where the plasterboard has fell/broken off of the ceiling.
This is not drywall board, it is original plaster board.
I need to cut some areas square to replace with tile and still leave some of the existing ceiling there, how do I cut the board without it cracking off or breaking off?
