Just make a plinth to block off gap above wardrobe. Plaster skim ceiling.

The other way is to use a roll on ready mix. Roll on thick and flatten best you can with whatever tools you can get in. It's sticks well. Easy build up. Flattens easy. No Pva needed. Then skim the rest with multi. Wouldn't bother going back to the sand as be good enough unless you are fussy. I'm starting to use some of this ready mixed. So easy to use vs plaster and I trowel on. Has its uses although most here won't touch it
