New member here—I have been lurking for a while and am grateful that this forum has held out against Web 2.0. Lots of useful tips to be found.
I live in the northeast US in a 1940s house with plaster ceilings and walls. The plaster system is a thin hard layer of finish plaster over a thick brown basecoat on wood lath. It doesn’t bubble in acid so it’s likely gypsum based, maybe not too much lime. (I’m a chemist by trade and this is only my best guess)
There are some cracks in the ceiling where the top coat has come off. See picture. The crack extends past the delaminated area by a few feet.
Most of the ceiling patches in this house appear to be tape and premixed drywall mud. Recently one of those repairs fell apart when the roof leaked. Would a repair with finish plaster (eg Diamond) & a bonding agent hold up better to moisture? And would the crack need any special attention? Adhesive? Expand into V shape and patch?
Would appreciate any advice you have! Happy plastering.
