New Plaster Big Cracks

Hi all

Had a plasterer come round to do some work. I noticed after about 10 days is that large cracks are forming. They are all forming around the windows. I think he used bonding to fill in gaps between the window reveals and the brick walls (previously filled with spray foam).

I’m not convinced this was the correct approach and may be linked to this issue. However, I can’t be certain.

Any ideas/possible reasons for this. I’ve attached some photos.

Thanks

Nothing to do with the plaster, that's movement 'twixt frame/foam and the brickwork. How big a gap did the foam fill? Call your window installer back, not the plasterer.

Thanks both. The gap is about 10cm between the reveal and the brickwork. Thing is, a different plasterer did more or less the same in our bathroom window, although he didn’t fill the gap with anything but managed to bridge the gap with some plasterboard. Everything seems fine in there.

I really hope this isn’t a symptom of something bigger perhaps. Subsidence perhaps?

Did the window installer use any frame fixings, or were they installed purely with foam, and nothing else? (I know that sounds like an absurd question, but under the circumstances, I have to ask)

Is your external brickwork structurally sound? Any structural subsidence with the property?

Hi @MakeItSmooth - the windows were probably installed ages ago. I only purchased the house 6 months ago and have been renovating. As far as I’m aware there are no structural subsidence. The brickwork appears to the sound, although a damp survey did mention something about penetrating damp but nothing major.

This is happening both at the front in the bay windows up and downstairs and also at the back in the second bedroom also upstairs.

I would have thought if there was subsidence this would have presented itself already - cracks in the walls prior to this new coat of plaster.

Really not sure what this could be.

Ffs,cracking like that and yous think it's over timber! There would be know where near that wide.this place

Lets get this straight - you are not getting mm and cm mixed up? 10cm is 100mm/4 inches in old money, ie big enough to put your hand in between window frame and the brickwork? - and its all filled with foam?

Does the window move when you push it.. Half these window firm say there not allowed to use screws any more bollox to that ive watched windows fall straight into the gardens a couple of times... f**k**g cowboys.
