It's easy if it's in good condition it's when it's not its frustrating, nice new walls and rubbish skirting and coving! Like Danny says have it all off and do a proper job. Skirting and coving costs barely anything for the results. As for masking tape that's more hassle than its worth. Use a decorators sponge you may find it easier than a brush.

Just skim over the skirting and tell them you've done the cast in situ low level cornice as a freebie.
